Saorview Platform -
Clean Feed - 23-08-2022
Not often we get too many developments on the Irish DTT platform.
Virgin Media is launching a new channel tomorrow - which will be carried on channel 7 on the platform.
RTEjr had to move positions to make way for the new channel. That move happened recently. The following caption was put out on channel 7 for a number of days:

On channel 207 at the moment, a 2RN test card and tone.

RTE had to move a channel to a number further down the EPG? How does that make sense unless it's for another RTE channel? It's like booting BBC Four off Freeview channel 9 and giving it's number to a commercial channel.

Could be possible that they sold the LCN to Virgin, something that's certainly possible in the UK on Freeview now (though presumably the BBC isn't allowed to).

Virgin Media Television were complaining to Irish Media Minister Catherine Martin about the introduction of VMTV Four on Saorview to be a very frustrating process.

The Irish Independent pay wall article was reporting today that VM were complaining about the channel number position of VM Four being too low on Saorview.
I think having the channel at no. 7 on the Saorview EPG is a very fair outcome for VM while it is regarded as a general entertainment channel. The breadth of content on the station is not really regarded as being ground breaking programming.
It is currently like every other VM station on the Saorview platform and others that is screening repeats of ITV Studios content from the UK.
I don't think anything else could have been explored further with how the channel is at the position it is now.

Can't access the full article. However, didn't the channel move only happen a week or so prior to the launch of VM4? RTEJr was displaced I think.
Given that the channel is just yet another outlet repeats of ITV Studios shows, I'm not sure how strong their case would be to displace channel positions occupied by the national broadcaster.

TG4 has been upgraded to HD on Saorview.
The upgrade took place on the platform today.
I have read from other forums that the upgrade of TG4 in HD is taking place on Mux 2 which is making very tight space for other stations on that multiplex.
There is also a little snag with anyone who owns Walker or Nordmende equipment that works with Saorview. Those people have to do a retune to get the station available on their EPG.
However for everyone else it comes up automatically on their EPG without a need for a retune.

1440x1080 unfortunately, just like RTE One and RTE 2.
Still an improvement on the awful 528x576 for the SD channels.
Is there a technical/capacity limitation on Saorview that prevents 1920x1080?

Challenge is to launch on Saorview from 1st February. It's already there on the EPG (LCN 8) and is showing an on screen caption until launch.

Challenge has appeared on Saorview since 10:30am this morning. Some of the content is pillar boxed to 4:3 on Saorview while it's shown in 544 X 576. Does this usually happen on TV platforms in the UK?
A white version of the Challenge logo is now also present on the Saorview Connect EPG.

Not familiar with that platform but Challenge does pillar box 4:3 archive programming in a 16:9 frame on other outlets in the UK, so you'll get black borders/bars either side.
