I figured that this deserved its own thread, with the news breaking in the last hour that Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to stand down. 

A press conference from Bute House is coming up at 11AM. I wonder whether STV or BBC One Scotland will break with network and take Sturgeon's statement live

Does anyone know why Doctors has been pulled this week from BBC One?

J can't see anything in the synopsys that has any parallel to current news stories.

Channel 4 is suffering a breakdown in the middle of Countdown.

A blank screen for about a minute, but now it's a programmes continue shortly caption.

Not sure if this is the right place to talk about this, so if not, mods are welcome to do their thing.

I have Fire TV sticks in the house, and I've ruled out ever watching 4:3 content on All4, owing to the fact that the picture was both stretched to 16:9 *and* cropped with pillarbox bars on the screen. I just figured this was down to incompetency on the part of the tech folk uploading the content with the wrong settings. I'd flagged this up to All4 from time to time and got no response. I tried looking online to see if anyone else had similar issues, and the results were very thin on the ground. I know people's pickiness over picture quality varies rapidly, but surely, there can't be this many people who are content having their content distorted *and* cropped?

Anyway, earlier this week, I decide to download the STV Player app to indulge in Brookside. I knew as soon as the adverts started that there would be trouble - the STV Player promo was formatted in 4:3 letterbox, but stretched across to fill a 16:9 image, *and* the dreaded pillarbox bars were cutting off the sides of the already distorted image. I brought this up over on the Brookside thread to see if anyone else had this issue. Unless the post was ignored, I can only gather I'm alone in my experiences once again.

I've just gone to play the most recent episode that's available at the time of posting, and to my delight, the STV Player promo was formatted to 4:3 letterbox, *but* it wasn't stretched! Low and behold, when Brookside started to play, I could see the overscan areas on either side of the picture. Rejoice! STV must've noticed the issue and fixed it. I went to check if they'd fixed the earlier episodes - they hadn't. So I went to see at what point the episodes were fixed... I got up to the episode I'd just played and found to be displaying correctly, and it was suddenly distorted and cropped again!

I can only assume this is something happening to me? I haven't come across any settings on either the STV or All4 apps, nor the system settings on the Fire TV stick, that could be having this affect on 4:3 content. Does anyone have the faintest idea what might be going on? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Technical issues mean we've now cut to an Adele performance from last year to fill time.

Has anyone seen the clip of the ITV Telethon 90 opening titles which featured an early appearance of the Thames Television blue and gold triangle logo?

I wonder if the Thames Television's triangle logo which was introduced in 1990 also actually made earlier appearances (including in print form) on merchandise and others as well?

CBS' Late Late Show might end after Corden, to be replaced by a reboot of @midnight, originated on their sister channel Comedy Central:

CBS had been considering as many as five different concepts with which it could replace Corden’s show, according to a third person familiar with recent discussions. Among those who were pitching CBS ideas were Fulwell73, the production company behind Corden’s program, and Ben Winston, one of Fulwell’s senior executives and a top producer at “Late Late Show.” Fulwell grew less interested in discussions when CBS’ plans for reductions in its production budget became better known. according to one of the people familiar with the matter.

Chris Hardwick, the original host of “@midnight,” is not believed to be in the running to host the new edition, according to one of the people familiar with discussions. CBS is said to prefer a female host, and is also pushing to make sure that talent in front of and behind the camera is diverse and hails from a range of backgrounds.

CNNI have been with the story in rolling news mode since it started at around 3am GMT.

BBC News are now in Rolling News mode with the News Channel opting into World's coverage after opener at 9am.

Sky News have also gone into rolling news mode since around 6am.

A random thought I’ve had

On the news today you have the typical ‘This is Steve he’s working from home today, why? Because this is his son Jack, he’s also working from home today because his teachers are on strike’

Or ‘This is Julie, she’s having to take two jobs, and still can’t pay the energy bills’ and you’ll have a report from her suitably downtrodden looking flat.

Where do they find these people from? How do they find a suitable case study person? Do they put some sort of request out?

Similarly say on budget day, you’ll have a report in a cafe where a group of people are watching the chancellors statement - you’ll have a retired person, a young person, a blue collar worker, an office worker,  some will be left wing, some right wing, some neither. The cafe owner will also chip in with their thoughts. How is this sort of thing set up?
