RE: BBC Sport - Andrew - 23-06-2024

The trailer for Wimbledon on the BBC isn’t the most exciting trail I’ve ever seen.

McEnroe’s voiceover doesn’t exactly sell it

RE: BBC Sport - Brekkie - 23-06-2024

They've been using the official Wimbledon trailer during Queens rather than their own.

They'r hardly Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Clearly they're harder than you think, as both of your suggested pronunciations are also wrong.

Worth saying there is always an official UEFA pronunciation guide for the Euros

They're directly copied from UEFA articles on the correct pronounciations of players' names.

Whilst those articles are definitely not perfect (there have been a few bad Welsh examples in similar articles), at 24 seconds into the video below, Bruno Fernandes pronounces his names almost exact to the provided.

"Pep" is already a concession to Portugal - in Brazil (where he was born and raised), it's
pronounced "PEP-i".

My point is that they're approximations at best - indeed, both of those articles give a different pronunciation for João, and don't mention anything to do with word stress - hence ridiculous suggestions such as Harry "mag-wire".

The Fernandes example gives you an approximation (at best) of his name being said conversationally, but then fails to mention how "Bruno" would also be pronounced in the same circumstance.

And the Kevin De Bruyne example in that article is just plain wrong.

RE: BBC Sport - Brekkie - 25-06-2024

Seems unnecessarily tricky to find the second Euros match on the BBC Sport app - only one listed in the headlines and Euros section and you have to click on the scores tab to switch to the other, but no video option there.

It used to be a case of all video feeds listed on the live match page, and if you couldn't find them there you had the Live Guide as well, which has now bee removed.

RE: BBC Sport - dvboy - 28-06-2024

Yesterday as BBC Two's Eastbourne coverage came on air at 1pm, Billy Harris was just going into a deciding set of his quarter final, and to my surprise they showed the rest of the match to its conclusion, followed by the two women's quarter finals on Centre Court.

Today as they came on air, the final game of the first WTA semi-final was in play so they showed that, and then the second one in full. They then showed the first ATP semi-final featuring Billy Harris in full, extending the BBC Two coverage window to 18:30. They they are now showing the second ATP semi-final on the red button and iPlayer (world feed graphics and commentary rather than their own). In past years they have shown extended highlights of the first WTA semi-final as they could fit in after showing the second live,

Previously the BBC haven't shown ATP matches from Eastbourne so they must have struck a last minute deal with the LTA. Hopefully this means the ATP final will also be shown, on iPlayer at least, after the WTA final on BBC One tomorrow.

RE: BBC Sport - Brekkie - 28-06-2024

It makes sense considering nobody else is really interested. I doubt Tennis TV are paying much.

Hopefully moving forward the BBC can have more complete rights to the LTA tournaments - presumably they'll pick up the Queens Womens event which will take place the week before the mens. That lowers the status of Eastbourne although I assume it'll continue in this week so it's scheduling and being an established part of the calendar should see it still being worthwhile showing.

RE: BBC Sport - dvboy - 29-06-2024

Tennis TV don't pay anything, they are the streaming service of the ATP. Assume you meant Tennis Channel which has the primary domestic rights until 2027.

The BBC's long-term secondary rights to Queen's and Eastbourne ended this year so hopefully that puts them in a better position to negotiate next year onwards with the LTA's schedule changes. At minimum it should be every centre court match on iPlayer with the flexibility to put any of them on BBC One or Two, which will probably mean focus on Queen's the first two weeks, and more evenly balanced ATP:WTA coverage from Eastbourne in the third.
