RE: UEFA Euro 2024 - RhysJR - 17-06-2024

Really surprised that ITV's highlights of the England game is using a similar format as yesterday - Celina Hinchcliffe presenting out-of-vision with the only punditry a segment from commentators Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon pitchside. Though in 2018 they had the same set-up for highlights shows, for England games they had a normal highlights show with an A-list studio team in Moscow.

The ITV highlights also do not use the centralised sponsor bumpers that the live coverage do. These are sponsored by Cupra.

The highlights really do feel like an obligation from ITV at this point sadly. Last night they were on after midnight, today not on straight after the late news, no studio, just the bare minimum at parts really.

I think they basically are. When the match is free to air, in peak time, and with highlights available on both the BBC Sport website and ITVX. The number of people watching the highlights will be small these days.

Highlights are probably more popular when the live event is behind a paywall (like Match of the Day) or in daytime/a lengthy all day event that needs summarising (like the Olympics)

And presumably the BBC included highlights of the earlier matches within their live coverage too.

See also the BBC highlights on Thursday of the England game, live on BBC1 at 5pm, are shunted to BBC2 at 11.05pm with The Outlaws airing at 10.40pm on BBC1.

The BBC also seem to be filling time by showing a full match replay after midnight

To Bein Sport's credit they only secured the rights to Euro 6 days before the start of the tournament. So they're basically using their standard studio.

They've done that for several tournaments now - usually an ITV match unless the BBC have shown England or a flagship match. Considering these matches then sit on iPlayer I'm surprised ITV don't object, though suspect those watching full matches on demand are quite small in number, especially when a 3 minute highlights cut is available instead.

Talking of highlights are ITV using the World Feed again for highlights of matches they don't show, with the exception of the England/Scotland games presumably?

Not all of them - Italy v Albania was off-tube, for example.

And the BBC doing full replays of ITV matches is nothing new - I remember either the 2002 World Cup or Euro 2004 matches getting replays the next day on the red button.

Think that makes perfect sense now that ITV have extensive pre and post match coverage surrounding the live games these days. The post match on Slovenia vs Denmark overlapped the BBC's build-up to England game by about 30 mins yesterday, including a full report from Gabriel Clarke and some punditry on Scotland.

I think a fully produced highlights show worked back in the days when they came on for 30 mins before games, which with ads and anthems amounts to about 17 mins, but now they can just cover things properly during the day.

Is RTÉ's coverage blocked in Northern Ireland? As I don't think the BBC's coverage is blocked in the Republic of Ireland?

Interesting that Laura Woods is covering ITV's prime time game tonight, while Mark Pougatch covered the earlier game. Wonder if they may have a bit more of an even share of the best games this tournament.

Don't think many people would be surprised if there is a switch by the time of next World Cup or maybe Euros. Bit of surprise that ITV have stuck with Mark for so long considering their history.
