I guess it's about having familar voices for both the Scotland and network audience. There is an argument it's the England games where the other nations should have an alternative commentary option that is less "we" and more "them".

Scotland v. Switzerland yesterday had an average audience of 8.6 million on BBC One, peaking at 9.4 million. So looks like the ratings down slightly on Friday night, though I'm not sure if the ITV X/BBC iPlayer numbers are counted there.

Also confirmation in the below that Alex Kay-Jelski, the new Director of BBC Sport, has begun in the role.

It's not been widely publicised elsewhere but 5 Live have been telling listeners that they can get their radio commentaries synced with the TV pictures on iPlayer (when the BBC are showing that match).

I've also realised that Chappers is fronting a lot of the pre and post match 5 Live programming from Berlin (because he does telly too). So the BBC obviously have radio broadcast facilities somewhere in the capital too.

The studio director and vision mixer are in Berlin, using a vision mixer desk in a gallery there, but controlling a vision mixer crate back in London (along with the sound and vision control, and EVS replay room). It's a bit of an unusual way of doing things, but seems to be working so far!

More ratings news - 13.1 million peak for England's draw on BBC1, while iPlayer and the numerous streams attracted 5.6 million hits.

ITV scored just over 6 million for Spain v Italy last night, which I think is the highest rating so far for a non-Home Nations match.

Portugal v Czech Republic on Monday (BBC1) attracted 5.7 million, while Italy v Albania last Saturday got 4.1 million.

With an election debate 7-8 on BBC One Wales, the build-up of tonight's match was on BBC Two Wales, befor moving to BBC One ahead of kick-off.

Looking back, the transition wasn't mentioned by any of the football team. On BBC Two Wales, the CA came in when the pre-match coverage went to the referee and the coin toss saying they were leaving the coverage and it continued on BBC One Wales. On BBC One, the CA said on joining the coverage they were joining th coverage half an hour in; the match then faided in at almost the next frame as BBC Two Wales had left it, with the French line-up just coming on to screen.

So, not absoultely perfect but it worked okay. The credit should go to the team in Cardiff for making it work well. Not sure why the debate had to be in that slot though, it made the schedule unnecessarily complex.

If only Christina Unkel could work for both channels.

She, or someone as good as her role, desperately needed to counter Jermaine Jenas' lack of referee qualifications on the BBC in the last few minutes.
