A bit of an odd one considering Irish viewers can watch the UK coverage on Freesat - I’m also willing to bet that the number of ROI households with Freesat is an order of several multiples the total number of households, in any country, with Saorsat.

Possibly, but for the World Cup in 1994 wasn’t it in Dallas?

Not sure it’d be in New York on cost grounds, if they wanted it close by possibly over the water in New Jersey.

Not that close - the IBC is in Leipzig.

Some images of the world feed graphics.
The empty space to the left of the clock bugs me a little. That being duplicated with the secondary added time clock means that in stoppage time the scoreboard goes halfway across the screen. It's not 16:9 safe either I believe, so that exasperates that issue.

For the record, the BBC titles do use the pinball style trailer - sadly that music is not instantly memorable as is the case over on the other side. The same titles used by Sportscene on BBC Scotland, which was hosted from a coffee table somewhere deep inside the Allianz Arena by Jonathan Sutherland (the highlights came from Pacific Quay back in 2021).

ITV's social teams will be pleased that we had the first Roy Keane rant of the tournament on the first night (and Scotland deserved it tbf).

Enjoyed the use of 'rules expert' Christina Unkel. She was clear though concise with her explanations and wasn't sitting on the fence on any of the decisions she was brought in for (qualities predecessors like Peter Walton often failed at). Did find it funny that she as an American in her pre-match appearance was explaining the new officiating innovations by using the rather non-American sports of cricket and rugby.

And wasn't expecting Lorraine Kelly of all people to be the fan representative on the ITV covrage today. Naturally she wasn't the lead presenter of her own show this morning (though she did appear live from Munich).

The IBC is in Leipzig not Berlin, though the Brandenburg Gate probably one of the most recognisable backdrops in Germany/Berlin. The VAR is based there as well, rather than the state of the art DFL/DFB VAR facilities in Cologne.

The official graphics not very special at all. Indeed remind me a bit of the BBC Sport graphics from around 2000.

I'm in Berlin this weekend, I noticed that studio setup in front of the Brandenburg Gate but didn't realise it was the BBC's. Very rainy here today so they might be indoors unless it clears up by their late game.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned somewhere, but reportedly the BBC's matches will be streamed on iPlayer in HDR, but not UHD. This is because UEFA's production format for the tournament is 1080p HDR, not full UHD like the last Euros. I'm pleasantly surprised the BBC is providing an HDR feed - I don't think they've done non-UHD HDR on iPlayer before...?

I don’t understand why it’s gone backwards when countries like Japan are doing 8k and 8k tellys, Europe going backwards.

Its an odd one as I assume the cameras and OB trucks are 4K capable if they are doing HDR.

Because the costs of doing 4K are still a lot more than handling HD, not least because it involves carrying 4x the amount of data at all points in the chain. And there isn’t enough of a consumer demand, to put it bluntly a huge amount of the audience, sadly, doesn’t care if the picture isn’t as sharp on their big telly.

The focus on HD HDR is because, it’s argued, the HDR (and wide colour) is where the biggest benefit comes. And it makes a difference on all sizes of screen. This can be achieved without having to carry the extra data that UHD brings.

No point talking about 8K, it’s likely to remain a very niche product.

I hadn’t seen those reports and yes I think it would be a first. The BBC policy has been that they would standardise on UHD = HDR and vice versa. Presumably if HD HDR is becoming more of a common offering they’ll want to be able to offer something that’s better than HD SDR.

Technically they have offered it before as - I think - one of the streaming profiles of the UHD HDR delivered 1080p HDR for those situations where a user didn’t have the bandwidth for the full 2160p stream.
