I think so but would need to her face. From my memory of this time. A couple of names to throw into the hat:
Janet Barrie
Clarence Mitchell

I think that was much earlier (circa 2001/2002). She later went to ITN and presented on their news channel for a while. Karin and Martine did the overnights around 2007/2008.

The fact is that people consume news differently to how they did 15 years ago. I really think it needs to be understood that the fondness (for want of a better word) that some have here for the news channel is massively out of step with the wider public, and focusing its resources in the right places (app, online, social media, podcasts) is 100% the right thing for the BBC to do.

They could plough millions into the news channel, it still wouldn’t change habits which are increasingly moving away from linear channels for news consumption.

Never thought I’d be quoting Hairspray here, but “you can fight it, or you can rock out to it.” In other words - embrace where things are going rather than trying to cling onto where they were.

I think the issue is how the BBC has approached it and how they are selling it - they're clearly holding on to the linear channel and running a significantly downgraded version of the UK news channel based on a BBC World simulcast, rather than looking at the picture as a whole and building what is arguably needed for today.    I'd argue they should have been looking more at the CBSN model to move forward.

What is interesting is they're now talking about a potential red button service to accompany it - I think it'll likely be pop-up iPlayer streams rather than anything along the lines of the BBC News Multiscreen or previous Connected TV app, but also suggests they are perhaps looking at alternatives to going into UK breaking news mode on the channel too.

Martine started doing overnights as early as 2001 IIRC. She did them for years, and stopped sometime around 2010 I think. Karin I think started around 2005 and like Martine stopped in about 2010.

RE: BBC News Channel/BBC World News Merger - itsrobert - 21-02-2023

Another couple of now well-known names who started out on News 24 overnights are Joanna Gosling and Rageh Omaar. Both around the year 2000, give or take. Clarence Mitchell was also on overnights at that time.

Heather McCarthy and Martine Croxall started them in about 2001, as did Alastair Yates (although I think he had been on overnights during the flags era). Other names from 2001 include Deborah MacKenzie and Susan Osman of Points West fame who always did Sundays.

From the flags era, I think I've seen examples of Jane Hill, Bill Turnbull, Adrian Finighan and Samira Ahmed on the overnights as well. It really was a training ground.

Is my memory foggy or did TV Forum's very own Nicky Schiller have to step in one time as one of the names above had fallen asleep somewhere in TVC?

It was Clarence Mitchell. There is a picture kicking about somewhere on TV Forum of Nicky in the chair filling in.

(It's quite far down but it is there.)

Ah, Susan the Strikebreaker! Or, to use her proper name, D'Oiley.

With regard to the much missed Mr. Yates. Here is a picture of him from the days of the Flags Era. So it would place him certainly being around 1997-99-ish. But I don't know if in the studio the far wall had changed to the BBC World Ident Fresco yet as seen in the second image.

The image of Alastair probably from 1997 or before the autumn of 1998 when News 24 were in N9. The image of Lindsey Brancher would be from after autumn 1998 and before April 2000 as it's from when BBC World had moved into N9.

RE: BBC News Channel/BBC World News Merger - Radio_man - 21-02-2023

Apologies, I didn't mean for this to turn into a nostalgia thread when I mentioned previous overnight anchors.
(James Dagwell was another young overnight anchor in the late 2000s, he usually did BBC Three news updates and entertainment news).

But my point stands - where are anchors of the future going to get vital on-air experience when overnights are from Washington & Singapore?

Presumably weekends will now become the training ground - especially if Saturday 1 - 6am and Sunday 1 - 6am are still from London.
