"Mothballed for good" is a contradiction in terms:

Quote:Definition
Stop using (a piece of equipment or a building) but keep it in good condition so that it can readily be used again.

In other words, there are no active plans to use Studio E for now (which might just mean "until the new financial year" or "until the News rebrand happens") BUT there is some semblance of some fag packet of some plan to potentially use it in the future for something. They will spend a nominal amount of money maintaining it and keeping it ready for a future use.

It is exactly what happened with Studio B. Move out the expensive programmes to save a bit of money this financial year, mothball the studio for a period of time, but at the beginning know that you propose, at some point in the future, using it for something.

Very different to someone making an active decision that they definitely do not need the resource ever again (at least in the short to medium term) and, for example, permanently converting it to an office space or selling it to another broadcaster/production company.

This is all very sad. It will be BBC world from 6 March effectivelym Make the best of it while it's still here.

RE: BBC News Channel/BBC World News Merger - CATV - 24-02-2023

There was an article that said the new BBC News channel was getting new cameras like in studio B. With branded programs and digital streams launching later this year and the fact there going with a 'soft launch' I wonder if the major rebrand will be later this year to with the launch of a new look studio E?

Why is running studio E more expensive than studio C? Aren't they supposed to be same in size & equipment? Also, with the big newswall you would think C actually uses more electricity.

All very sad indeed and I very much doubt there will be any form of proper on air send of the BBC News channel as is, so here's my little package featuring some (relatively) recent memories and presentation...

Seems Martine Croxall is saying that E is getting a refit.

That's great to hear regarding E - at least that there are still plans for it post-refit!

What a great compilation there mate - the BBC News Channel had some iconic moments over the years, will be really sad to see it all go before our eyes

Where has it been said that it is? Or is this just an assumption because everything will come from C instead of E?

I suspect they cost roughly the same to run. Certainly the same amount of crewing. However I suspect the reason for C is you can brand it differently depending on the programme - you can't do that so easily in E, the only thing you can do is change the side screens which don't even appear most of the time except in wide shots. In C you can have different backgrounds behind the presenter for different programmes.

I suspect the long term plan is to move everything into C, establish the new joint channel editorially but without much of a rebrand (most things will just be branded "BBC News except the special programmes which are already established on both channels anyway), and then do a big bang relaunch (oncluding new graphics, new graphics, new music, etc) once E has been refurbished.

Very sad indeed, and some good memories of the channel in those clips there! From the infamous camera bloopers (Martine’s “if I sidle in you can pretend like you haven’t noticed”) to Simon’s paper moment and all the excitement of double-headed presentation back in the day.

Simon and Joanna both showing what pros they were too, conducting standing-up presentation with no backup scripts!

I’ll really miss the channel and frankly won’t forgive the BBC for this. The plans are a mistake.
