I'm not particuarly bothered if the newsreaders are British or not. Kimberley Leonard proved on Sky News that you can come from an African country and grasp domestic news.

This discussion about British or non British presenters is getting a little tedious. I'm pretty sure the original post was not meant to be taken the way some have here.

We are all very aware it's not a prerequisite that you need to be 'British' to present the news in this country.

Absolutely but why aren't they using the talent they already have and are paying for, that are way more experienced and known by the (dare I say it) British viewers?

Martine Croxall is way better than any of these newbies.

Sorry not sorry 😐

It didn't click to me why they want Emma over in LA when I posted that news. As the best Ireland Correspondent in decades for BBC News, she'll be able to bring her own style of accessible journalism to the next Presidential Election.

I've loved how despite not being from NI or the Irish Republic, she was able to provide coverage of what is a very complex political structure based on secterian lines and got approval from all sides for her journalism which will come in handy for another divided country in the post Trump era.

In that case, wouldn't it be better to send her to the Washington bureau? The LA correspondent tends to get deployed on the fluffy entertainment stuff... I can't say I've often seen David Willis or Sophie Long tackling any complex political stories...

It might be better, but I suspect that Ireland correspondent is part of the World Affairs rotation circuit - whose subject matter varies substantially depending on where you're posted. It's an odd system and they do seem rotate less frequently now, but it'd surely be better to have reporters stay in one area - you don't really have business, science, etc. correspondents moving to another subject overnight.
