I've always thought he'd go after the Queen's death and the King's coronation.

Yes me too. It's an extraordinary career though - from anchoring so many of the main news programmes for so long to being the voice of some of the biggest stories of recent years. One of the few genuinely household names in tv news.

Be nice to have him front a BBC One bulletin one last time before he goes. Everyone else has had a go lately!

It won't happen, but I'd love to have him on the 6 on his last day.

What an incredible career Nicholas Witchell has had
From being known as the Beeb man who sat on a lesbian in 1988
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGNrg-RYGIc
To being called a scab after he hosted the news during a BBC strike action in 1989 (and parodied on Spitting Image for that as well)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UjQLHuZe44
To receiving angry comments from the now King Charles back in 2005
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_pjDdO7i9o
And also hosting the BBC Breakfast News and becoming Royal Correspondent, he has had a remarkable career, I wish him a nice retirement!

Funny you should mention BBC Breakfast News and Royal Correspondent in the same sentence; Sarah Campbell has been doing a fair bit of presenting the former in recent times, as well as reporting as the latter. It seems that the BBC News bigwigs rate her highly - she has also presented BBC News bulletins these last few months as well - they may even promote her to become Royal Editor, given that it is one of few reporting teams of BBC News not to have a titled "Editor" (that's my prediction anyway).
