ITV is now running with ITV NEWS at ten with normal titles.

When you’ve had pretty somber, low-key reporting for hours and then suddenly the BONGS strike - it’s pretty jarring

Studio B is far too bright for this. Too much white. They should be able to turn the lights off. Newsroom backdrop isn’t suitable either, nor are the split screen graphics which should have black backgrounds not white.

This is surprising and I thought they would have gone for a more subdued background as well given the enormity of the event.  It's not like royal coverage of old.

Here's how U.S. networks cover the death of the Queen. Only CBS that have prepared special open report. Neither NBC or ABC have.

I'm a big fan of Studio B but yeah, it's almost like they've not loaded the correct template. You go from the very bespoke, solemn titles into the standard bright white studio.

I guess it could have been so much different - wasn't E with the purple backdrop (later used for Newsnight) the original plan?

For anyone interested, "Australian TV Fan" has uploaded some videos of their breaking news/breakfast. Including Channel Nine who went straight to the BBC so viewers saw the "News Report" slide.

It's something they'll have been prepared from literally since day one.

One interesting thing is that apart from the BBC, no other broadcaster in the UK has ever handled a change of monarch. ITV was still over 3 years away last time, ILR was over 20 years away, Sky News was the best part of 40 years away- it's all new territory for them. It reminds you just how long she was queen.

Well we heard about obituary rehearsals in studio E with the blinds down which I assumed would have happened for a passing of major important figure yet that didn’t happen with huw over a live newsroom backdrop which I thought would have been covered up based on what was said in the past regarding these rehearsals.

As to Yalda Hakim, she’s usually unflappable and has come on leaps and bounds, it’s very disappointing to see her make such an uncharacteristic mistake, she has apologised but one would hope that hasn’t ruined her career.

"blinds down" was probably to stop people outside thinking it was a real broadcast, and to be significantly noticeably different from normal not to be put to air.

They said on the radio before that she’s been Monarch for a quarter of the time the USA has existed!
