American Sports Presentation - Medianext.MX - 10-09-2022

This thread focuses on the presentation of American sports coverage, and what better way to start with the NFL, which went on for another season Thursday. NBC formally launched the new Sunday Night Football graphics, introduced on Super Bowl LVI, additionally, a transparent gray Peacock DOG was introduced instead of the fully coloured one used since 2013.

The American Fox Sports (which remains under Murdoch control) will debut a massive new Studio A (at Fox Studios in Los Angeles) on Sunday, designed by Jack Morton PDG, which embraces, AR, VR, XR and immersive mixed reality.

As part of its bid to attract a younger audience (including poaching Buck and Aikman from Fox), ESPN will launch a newly remixed EDM version of Johnny Pearson's Heavy Action, the theme tune of Monday Night Football, by star DJ Marshmello; he will also curate the out of break and interstitial music used during the telecast.

In an unexpected move, ESPN had to move two college football games to NFL Network due to these games clashing with other commitments at their channels; although the games were produced by ESPN, their existing CFB graphics were rebadged to feature the NFL Network logo...

NFL Sunday is on for the first time in the season, but no graphic changes are expected by the broadcasters for the season, except for NBC; Fox, given it is broadcasting Super Bowl LVII, might unveil a refresh of their existing graphics for the game, but who knows... CBS will, however, launch an improved version of RomoVision, its tactical libero gimmick to illustrate Tony Romo's analysis, for which they won an Emmy last May...

CBS changed their logo DOG in the top right hand corner, it now has a blue-ish rectangle behind it. Last season it was floating in space.

Amazon made a small gimmick to its down marker to include the Amazon smile logo in whatever direction, as a form of brand integration; according to TNF (and SNF) EP Fred Gaudelli, this use was approved by the company. However, since week 2, it has been replaced by a more conventional arrow marker, however, with organic forms (resembling clearly the smile logo).

During a podcast, Mike North, NFL VP of broadcasting said they weren't allowed to use the smile logo, presumably for advertising reasons (No advertising on the field?)

ESPN's NBA coverage receives a new look coinciding with the start of the Playoffs, with a more compact scoreboard and cues from contemporary hip-hop culture, including iridescent chrome as the centerpiece of the color palette. ESPN has also asked Joel Beckerman to remix its longtime theme, the first such remix since it was introduced in 2006. The new graphics also sign a shift in ESPN's professional basketball strategy, with the WNBA and the G-League gaining equal footing with the NBA, including adapting the new graphics to both franchises.

According to Tim Burke, Fox is launching new graphics for its NFL coverage this Super Bowl. It looks like they are going for a "revolutionary" design once again.

Their outgoing NFL graphics were also considered "revolutionary", taking cues from gaming and comics, resulting on divisive reviews on social media.

It can’t be worse than what they have now, tbh, three years later and it hasn’t grown on me.

For those who want to watch the domestic NFL broadcast on Fox, btw - famous adverts and all - NFL GamePass is offering a month pass for the Super Bowl for £1/€1. Yes you’re paying for a game you can see FTA on ITV/STV/VMTV. It has the adverts though! Also Curt Menafee/Terry Bradshaw and co are there too, I guess.

I like CBS' the most, NBC's are nice, Amazon is in the middle, Fox's were in 4th for me, and last are ESPN's I really don't like ESPN's.
