It's official: XFL is merging with USFL to become UFL, United Football League. The broadcasting partners from both leagues are seemingly on board. First match kicks off in March.

Over on Gray, WPCH is broadcasting the NBA team Atlanta Hawks games, taking over from Bally.

Interestingly, this circled back to its SuperStation days, when it and WGNX (now WANF) shown their games. This was one of the promos on WTCG in 1978 (at 1:47):

And from the source author, the open for WGNX broadcasts, circa 1984:

They also grabbed the New Orleans Pelicans games across Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi from Bally.

The schedule for the final regular week of the NFL season has been published. Bills @ Dolphins is the headline match and will be shown on NBC Sunday Night Football. Steelers @ Ravens and Texans @ Colts form the ABC/ESPN Monday Night Football double header on Saturday night, with all the other matches airing in the usual slots on FOX/CBS on Sunday afternoon.

This weeks games are branded “NFL on ESPN” rather than “‘Monday Night Football”, which makes more sense.

Unfortunately, the weather means some of the cameras are quite blurry.

A perfectly normal day on NFL Network...

NFL Redzone ran full end credits tonight before the touchdown montage, which was a nice touch and a rarity in US sports broadcasting.

The NFL Super Wild Card Weekend schedule has been announced.

Kansas City Chiefs will host the first ever play-off game to be exclusively streamed on Peacock.

A really nice ending, with a team picture and many getting namechecked by Scott Hanson as well. A classy end to what is a very classy and enjoyable broadcast.

Does this mark the first time a NFL play off game hasn’t been nationally free to air? I think all of ESPN’s have been simulcast on ABC?

I presume it’ll still be taken by NBC stations in KC and Miami.

CBS' Super Bowl plans have been unveiled:

- The network will have a week-long "residence" in Las Vegas, with the main studio located in front of the Fountains of the world-famous Bellagio Hotel on the Strip.
- All CBS Sports programming (including CBSSN and CBS Sports HQ) will air during the week on that studio, including its special edition of The NFL Today pregame show.
- Moreover, other Paramount properties (including content from CBS News, Stations and Media Ventures) will use the studio: Norah O'Donnell will anchor the Evening News during Super Bowl week there, and CBS Mornings will air from Las Vegas the Thursday and Friday before the event; The Talk, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition and Drew Barrymore will also tape there, and CBS O&Os and affiliates will be able to use the setting for special segments.
- CBS is also planning to make available a 4K HDR feed for the first time ever to select cable operators and streaming providers, whilst making the standard 1080p fully HDR compliant on most cable operators. No word if will be native or unconverted (Fox already has aired two Super Bowls in 4K, but upconverted from 1080p).
- And, unlike other years, CBS has sold Spanish-language rights to the game to TelevisaUnivision; the company has already a longterm deal for the game in Mexico, and, whilst working with CBS teams, the feed might be earmarked for both Mexican and Hispanic American audiences.

More on the Bally situation... Amazon MGM Studios attempted to bail out the network from bankruptcy as part of the company's push to expand live sports coverage on Prime Video by taking a stake; but the MLB has rejected the deal.

Sinclair is already anticipating the death knell for the network; however, short-term carriage and rights deals with Comcast, DirecTV and the NBA and the NHL were done before the year was over, allowing teams to take the streaming and/or free-to-air way for the rest of the season:

After many of these teams (the Utah Jazz, the Phoenix Suns...) have taken this road, the OKC Thunder has redistributed rights for the remainder of the Friday night games to station's inside their DMA; Griffin has gotten rights for the Oklahoma state, whilst Gray has bought rights for the nearby regions in Kansas and Texas (Wichita Falls-Lawton and Wichita) and Morgan Murphy in Joplin-Pittsburg (border of Kansas and Missouri).

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Buffalo Bills, originally scheduled for Sunday 18:00 GMT moved due to Monday 21:30 GMT due to dangerous weather conditions. The match will still be broadcast on CBS/Paramount+.

That's right - the NBC stations in KC and Miami will be showing the game, but they're the only ones.
