RE: ITV News - Ben Shatliff - 31-01-2023

Trends in gradients, 3D effects, fancy animations, etc. always come in and out in a matter of years and so you inevitably get left having to update every few years if you down that route. It's similar to the trap of choosing computer graphics that are 'cutting edge' - they'll no longer be so in two years time and yours will look outdated rather quickly. This was particularly the case in the 2000s among all the news broadcasters - Sky's 2008 graphics come to mind in particular.

The question being then which quite often is asked; are we going to see a tweak or is it staying exactly as it is?

There have been rumours on here saying yes and no.

Tonight was updates in the yellow carpark rebrand. Did it not has its own graphics then or have they been updated since?

RE: ITV News - mrarg1393 - 01-02-2023

The ITV News app has just had an update this morning which now has the new ITV font… wonder if this means there’s an impending change for the main programme soon?

It’ll be a shame if the current titles go

Not really, they've been around for over 10 years now, and the clips aren't updated unless for something major like the Queen's passing.  The look over all feels so stale.  It needs to be completely freshened up.  Graphics, studio, titles, everything.

RE: ITV News - JMT1985 - 01-02-2023

When does ITV News move out of their newsroom for the refurbishment?

They already have, months ago.

That is why I asked

Actually I don't think it looks stale at all.  They played a bit of a blinder with their revamp back in 2013.

[*]The graphics are functional without being unnecessarily fanciful
[*]Gone were the studio gimmicks of the 'Multi-Story Car Park of News'
[*]The titles are still fine, I wouldn't notice if they changed the images anyway (unless for specific events)
[/list]

Sometimes, you just manage to create something which has longevity, and ITV News nailed it 10 years ago.

"Tinkering for the sake of tinkering" is a lesson ITV News learnt with the various 'News at Ten/When/Nightly News' fiascos.

They just produce bulletins and events programmes such as elections for ITV1, and the whole pres package they use seems as fresh now as it did back in 2013.  The studio set certainly does, as it's not as though it ever needs cleaning, even the 'glass top' on the desk is CGI, so no scratches or smudgy finger marks. Tongue

I don't agree at all.  The look has been used for so long on all the programmes that it just feels incredibly dated at this point.  The graphics just feel like they aren't even trying anymore, and yes, it's still a clean look, but as clean as the graphics are, they're still based on some incredibly old technology at this point.  A technical upgrade is going to be needed.

The fact that the virtual studio is "clean" means nothing, that look is also dated now, and really needs to be replaced.  Again, it's 10+ year old tech here, and it'll need to be upgraded soon.  It still has that CGI look about it.  Granted, it still looks very passable when compared to some CGI creations that we've seen since then, but it's not quite real enough, and that's what dates it.

The titles now are just boring.  They've been overused to death, with the exception on the current News At Ten titles, but even these are now starting to get stale.  It's not as though they couldn't update the look, but at this point, I'd rather see a complete new look than an update of this.

The fact that both ITV News and BBC News are using looks that are at best stale, and at worst, growing their own cultures.  BBC are having to upgrade their studios with new tech.  ITV will have to do the same and soon.
