RE: ITV News - Ben Shatliff - 26-08-2023

Gamal has presented News At Ten before and been covering the ITV Evening News these last two weeks as well as still doing an odd night on Granada Reports.

Wouldn’t be surprised it if was something Gamal negotiated as part of his move to Granada from Sky - some amount of national exposure.

That may have also been the case for Kylie Pentelow when she moved from EMT to ITV News West Country, you do most of your shifts in Bristol, but we'll give you some weekend, summer and Christmas national cover as part of the deal. I don't think it was that long before Kylie did her first shifts covering network and London on a Saturday.

Lucy Meacock of course was another Granada presenter who was on the cover roster for weekends.

He is quite good though, definitely above the likes of Charlene and Lucrezia.
Also good to see Kylie pentelow been utilised more lately, think she'd be quite good on NaT

Funny how some regions provide cover whilst others don’t. Seem to remember the late great Tony Morris from Granada doing a weekend once too.

Yes seems a limited amount of regions have at some point had a regional presenter on the nationals and from what I recall more on the news channel:

Jonathan Hill from Wales
Kylie from Westcountry
Sameena Ali Khan from Central
Lucy Meacock from Granada
Tony Morris from Granada
Gamal from Granada
Lucy Owen from Wales
Lynda Bryan’s from UTV
Andrea Byrne from Wales
Charlotte Hawkins from Meridian

Can’t think of any from Anglia/Tyne Tees/Calandar/Border/Channel or Scotland

A few good regional presenters I’m sure we would all like to see on the nationals

RE: ITV News - newsjunkie - 27-08-2023

Having spoken to some of those presenters (and I can't be 100% sure it's the same in every region) the national work is usually on top of their regional work.

ITV has always been keen for their regional presenters to work as much of the week as possible (often 9 days across a fortnight).

Weekend presenter shifts have often been on top of that (so good money & opportunity) but when you add in the travelling it can be quite a big commitment and pretty gruelling if done for long periods.

I don't think national work would therefore be in any of the regional presenters contracts, but that doesn't mean it isn't mentioned as something that could potentially be possible during negotiations.

Obviously Gamal this week & Kylie separately must have been agreed to take time away from their usual gig as they were working during the week.

RE: ITV News - London Lite - 27-08-2023

Kylie must be one of the longest serving regional cover presenters as it wasn't very long after starting at West Country that she'd travel up to London to do the network cover shifts.

As we know, she's leaving West Country in September, but made no mention of not continuing the national bulletins, which may suggest she's been offered a contract in London.

Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester are pretty straight forward rail trips to the capital.

It's worth noting that regional reporters also cover network reporting shifts as well, Charlotte Cross from ITV Central has been doing that for a good few years too and Charlie Frost before she joined the ITVX team did it from Anglia as well.

Obviously it's summer and more than that the peak holiday period of summer but it seems this last couple of weeks even the B-team has been off screen too.  Yasmin Bodalbhai has been doing the Lunchtime News as well.

What has been noticeable this summer is that Charlene White has been off as well, so hasn’t been covering the Evening News.

In regards to regional presenters doing the national news, some will want the opportunity just to say they’ve done it, others will want to do it for the showreel/CV so it looks good if a job opportunity comes up either within ITV or elsewhere

Other regional presenters presumably have no interest at all in appearing nationally and are happy being the face of their region

There is always the risk of that quiet Saturday night shift you’ve agreed to do, where you’ve just got two 10 minute bulletins and something nice to put on your showreel, turning into open ended breaking news if something kicks off

As what happened to Lucrezia Millarini when she was largely working on ITV News London, she got the usually quiet Saturday evening shift and ended up covering hours of breaking news of the London Bridge terrorist attack.
