RE: ITV News - ldnpres - 17-11-2022

How is the Evening News rating since the hour-long bulletin was introduced, out of interest?

I personally have watched much less since it was brought in. It feels like ITV bosses made the decision purely based on the hour-long episodes for Coronation Street, and probably 'told' ITV News bosses that it was going to be brought in. I think in fairness, the Evening News team have really tried with the format, but it often feels very padded out in the last 20-30 minutes. The 7pm 'investigation' type report was good at first, but that's tricky to put together every day, and once you get past that, it seems to be endless teasers and a pretty poor extended weather bulletin.

It also feels like they're still toying with the bulletin, the recently introduced 'Ask ITV News' for instance.

On another subject, it's amazing to think the current branding has been in for 10 years next year. It still looks pretty fresh, although I'm excited to see what they come up with next year. I understand there's a big remodelling of the newsroom in Grays Inn Road - it would be brilliant to see them move back into the newsroom, IMO, like they were in the late nineties. I think CSO and green screen studios are less and less common in news around Europe, so it would be good to see ITV make the change.

RE: ITV News - JMT1985 - 17-11-2022

ITV News moved out of their real newsroom in 1999 when they relaunched their news with the now famous axing of News at Ten in March 1999.

They did have a small spell of having the newsroom as part of their backdrop from 2006 until 2009, when the virtual backdrop had the atrium view, which showed parts of the newsroom, however since 2009 it has all been the world of computer generated backdrops.

It would be nice for them to move back into a newly redesigned newsroom, that would be a nice, fresh new look for them to do.

No idea about the ratings, but it’s funny you mention that you think the team seem to have struggled to fill the hour. Apparently the extended bulletin, and the new ITVX news service, have not gone down well at all chez ITN. The talk is of highly overworked journalists, and not enough resources to properly fulfill the extra coverage. There was an article in Private Eye about it a while back - I’ll dig it out and scan it.

It was never about ratings. It fills 2 and a half extra hours a week for them, meaning they don’t have to create half hour 7pm / 7.30 programmes to fit around Corrie and Emmerdale.

ITV “bosses” will have told ITN what was happening as it is them who are buying the product. ITN don’t really have any say in scheduling.

RE: ITV News - eyeTV - 17-11-2022

It looks like tomorrow will be the last 1hr Evening News for at least the next 3 weeks with the World Cup affecting schedules.

Where ITV has the 4pm & 7pm kick-offs it appears they won't have an Evening News at all. And on the other days Emmerdale is going back to 7pm for hour long editions.

It isn't the first time it has been used on News at Ten - some weeks ago they had Rohit doing an explainer on Ukraine.

The ratings have held up remarkably well.

Take Wednesday for example. ITV Evening News got an average of 3.3 mil. Yes the BBC Regional News was higher but The One Show was only 2.4.

I was very sceptical but actually it’s been quite the shrewd move for ITV. A clear commitment to News, ratings seemingly holding up and a cheaper product to produce.

Sounds like the hour-long Evening News is here to stay, then. A gamble that has clearly paid off.

I suspect ITN have thought (and are thinking of) lots of different ways (and dare I say gimmicks?) to keep viewers engaged in that second half, and I expect we've not seen some of these yet. (Just as long as they don't bring back The Pulse! Sick ) One thing I am surprised they haven't tried is a sport bulletin - I can only imagine this is because ITV don't have a massive amount of sport rights anymore. A lot of hour-long bulletins on channels in other countries tend to dedicate a good 10-15 minutes of that hour to sport news.
