UKTV Play to go HD - London Lite - 28-09-2022

UKTV Play will relaunch in November with a new logo and adaptive bitrate streaming with shows being streamed in up to 1080p.

And it'll probably be better than ITVX.

Also '1080p', I hope other service get onboard with offering it.

All4 is already 1080p for most shows, iPlayer offers 1080p on Roku, some Smart TV's from Hisense, Panasonic, LG and Samsung, plus some Fire TV sets and the Cube.

With ITVX supposedly also going up to 1080p from November, it leaves My5 as the only of the main VOD services in SD. (STV Player is 720p)

I assume it won't be in 50fps though. Is there a reason why iPlayer is the only service that actually maintains the proper frame rate?

50fps uses more bandwidth than 25fps.

Wasting no time, the new logo has been applied across all broadcast promos and ECPs on UKTV immediately from today too. With the promos making the 'UKTV Play' logo much more prominent than before with a full screen slate at the end rather than just a tiny secondary logo tacked on as before. They seem to have done quite a thorough job replacing all the old trailers all at once too as I've not yet spotted an old version still going out.

I see the UKTV lettering is more spaced out on there, so is the logo for UKTV itself getting tweaked too?

The ITV hub does as well. They're the only major UK-based streamers I can think of though, sadly. If the BBC and ITV can offer it (not to mention a very large amount of YouTube content makers), I can't really see why the major players like Netflix, Amazon (outside of sport), Disney, Paramount etc. can't.

50fps uses more bandwidth than 25fps.

But if we're going to expect streaming to replace linear (and physical media for that matter) as we keep being told, 50/60fps really does have to be a must or you're offering an inferior experience on a lot of content. Was very frustrating that as the pre-1998 episodes of The Bill were only on UKTV play, we only got them at 25p.

Can't say I am fond of the logo, but UKTV hasn't had a 'Good' Logo since 2009. Wish that they would go back to something similar to the 1997 UKTV Network era of logos, but Reithed
