While Nexstar is scrambling for replacement stations, CBS is applying to the FCC for changing the callsigns of KBCW in San Francisco and WPCW Pittsburgh to KPYX and WPKD respectively.

Shame , they didn't go for the old letters of KBHK (the ones they used before 2006) for KBCW... they'll still be able to use their jingle there though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSTLBPVjnHE

Why would they want/need to change the callsign?

They clearly want to sever all ties with CW. Not sure if there's any legal issue about passing off if a station with a CW sign doesn't carry the programming, but it helps to ensure there's no confusion.

Ah, see now the dropping of the CW element, but any meaning in the new call signs?

Most likely the meaning for the new call sign for WPCW is Pittsburgh KDKA. Not entirely sure about the other one.

And the San Francisco/Bay Area station is just the callsign of CBS' O&O in that market (KPIX) with a letter changed.

According to NewscastStudio, FTVLive got a report that, with the call sign changes, CBS might be ready to fill the CW spots with more news from its sister stations (aping the KCAL scheduling), dropping the CBS News Now local/national experiment.

KBCW's branding was also KBCW on TV so that would be a little odd for them to continue, the other one could have kept the letters , but it feels like the stations are going to be branded by their call letters if KMAX, KCAL and KTXA are any evidence so WPCW as a brand probably would confuse.

I don't think it's a legal issue since like KCWX hasn't been with the CW since 2010 and they still use that name even as a branding .

A big grab for CW Sports: Nascar's Xfinity Series will be moving from Fox and NBC to the network starting in 2025, lasting for 7 years.
