KMAX-TV CBS Owned CW station  that's leaving the CW
Nexstar does own station, BUT... unlike Tampa it's not a sister station to a bigger one, and it's not an indie like KRON or WPHL , it's the FOX station KTXL-TV.  They are also in a contract with FOX so.. and it would be really a dumb move to switch FOX to the CW, I'd think Nexstar knows that. There they might have to use a sub channel. There is Hearst owned KQCA-TV and again that might be tough sell.  Otherwise, I think the easiest thing here is a CW sub station or using 2 hours on one of the channels like the TBD station (that's the name of the network)
Turns out it's not as hard as you may think:
Quote:With the comprehensive multi-year agreement, Hearst will continue carrying The CW’s entertainment and sports programming in six markets across the country, and beginning Sept. 1, will launch The CW on Hearst’s KQCA, a new CW affiliate in Sacramento, Calif. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Hearst has been an important partner for The CW throughout the years and we are extremely pleased to be launching a new CW affiliate in Sacramento,” said Dennis Miller, president of The CW Network. “KQCA-TV is already home to LIV Golf in Sacramento, and this agreement will ensure that viewers there won’t miss a moment of our other highly-rated sports and entertainment programming, including ACC college football and basketball, and Inside the NFL, both of which premiere this fall.”

I guess having CW (or anything else) is better than having MyTV Big Grin

So as of now, the stations that are going to be the new CW affiliates are going to be
KQCA (Sacramento)
WTTA (St.Petersburg-Tampa)
WPHL-TV (Philadelphia)
KRON-TV (San Francisco)

We're now starting to see the new brands CBS' soon-to-be-former CW affiliates will take on...

WUPA in Atlanta will be Atlanta69:

Meanwhile, KBCW is advertised as the inventively named KPIX+, with new newscasts launching on 8 and 9pm (the same spots occupied by KRON):

TVNewsTalk users also spotted some domains in similar patterns are registered by CBS.

That gives hope that WPSG-TV will go by PHILLY 57, that's been on their CW Philly logo for the whole time and an old name so it wouldn't be out of the realm.

On the CW front, they have about 3 weeks to go.... and not an announcement for Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and  Detroit. (Directv isn't very happy that "Mission" is buying WADL in Detroit , which would go for Nexstar owning it so)

Atlanta is kind of hard to pick a station.
WPCH- Peachtree TV (the former TBS home station) is owned by Gray, it currently has news at 9pm and Gray might be waiting to see if Bally Sports South implodes and grab up some sports rights that the CW could hamper.  WATL has 11 Alive News from 8-11pm.  Election year is coming up so... that sweet politics ad money is coming.  Not saying they couldn't give up on 8-10pm news for the CW, but that seems to be a hard sell.
KQCA in Sacramento was probably an easier sell because they are just running Big Bang Theory and Last Man Standing before their 10pm News .

Seattle is hard too. Ironic... since Nexstar used to own the two former Tribune stations there.
I would be surprised if KING/KONG decides to drop their  9pm newscast that have been running a long time for the CW, and same with Joe TV at 8 and 9.  But again maybe Nexstar offers a really tempting deal  and Gray/ Tegna/ Fox take a bite.

In Pittsburgh ,  I can still see WPNT/ Sinclair making a deal and the ACC on the CW might be a sweetener since there is an ACC school in that area.  WPNT is the only one of the My Network TV stations I mentioned that still airs the network in sequenced time of 8pm and 9pm, in theory they could see the CW a bump up in programming.  They currently air LIV golf too so...

Promotion for the rebrand has started.

My take is they wanted to use KPIX+ in order to imitate how Fox O&O KTVU brands its sister indie station KICU (KTVU Plus).

Back to programming and network news, during the Nexstar earnings call, Perry Sook himself compared The CW is "increasingly looking like Fox" citing the increased dependence on programming produced by indies, as well as some sports rights. Sook wants to increase its dependence on sports rights, as well as a cautious approach to content strategy, dubbed as a “Moneyball” strategy.

Additionally, Dennis Miller's contract has been extended to 2027.

However, ratings are not helping: at the last minute, the network dropped its Tuesday travelogue lineup due to low and severely dipping ratings. Reruns of staples "Penn & Teller" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" have replaced both acquired shows.

Additionally, the fall schedule will be rolled-out in various phases, with Tuesday nights coming first, beginning with the launch of the new incarnation of Inside the NFL on September 5.

Back to CBS, first programme move for the post-CW era: Syndicating crime and justice magazine Forty Eight Hours to the stations. Not just for existing O&Os, but also network affiliates and, especially, the new independent sister stations.
Quote:CBS Stations programming chief John Budkins added, “48 Hours is a great fit for our CBS-owned stations. We look forward to showcasing the program in primetime in 10 of our markets, including on seven of the eight stations where we will be transitioning from The CW to independent status next month.”

Seven of the eight? Does the eighth one already have the show on another channel?

The 8th one is KBCW which will be doing the news in the former CW slots

I was guessing they mainly have news outside of those slots too but only seems to be 6-9am, with syndicated shows outside those times. Are they required to have a certain amount of original content in primetime?

I don't think there's a requirement, but I think here the case is that KPIX is using their sister station to have local news at 8 and 9pm, probably after seeing KRON having some success with it, and since KRON is dropping those hours for the CW.. they get a free chance.  I'm surprised KDKA in Pittsburgh isn't doing it since they were one of the few still have a normal 10pm Newscast instead of the national News Now format.  I think maybe CBS is waiting for any RSN's stuff to go down to get some deals for sports teams and easily preempt 48 hours on the stations and air Baseball/Hockey/Basketball etc.
