I seem to recall 2-TEN FM broadcasting a preview for Meridian Tonight every weeknight.

LBC used to supply LWTs news bulletins in the 80s.

Ah, of course - think they had a tie-up for 'Area Information' during the early 80s, too.

On the subject of outsourced bulletins, an ITN newsflash read in-vision by Granada announcer Malcolm Brown from 1981. Followed by Malcolm's attempt at some philosophical commentary about the late film just before closedown...

And using a version of the ITN logo that they use themselves over a decade later

It seems there was a mix of practice in these late night newsflashes - ITN presenter from Thames/LWT, Thames/LWT announcer to network, Local announcer. Possibly depending on whether the network was together for the late film?

That all seems very odd. It was a requirement of the IBA circuit routing that no ITV company would be more than one circuit switch ‘away’ from a source of ITN precisely for the purposes of news flashes etc. I wonder if this was very late at night and the duty newscaster at ITN had already left the premises and there was no-one there to actually present a newsflash? A rip and read locally perhaps?

BTW, Malcolm is one of the very nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

An interesting little clip that apparently depicts a CNN anchor being seconds away from wrongly announcing President Bush Sr had died, before being told off screen to "stop".

RE: TV Social Media Pres Gold - VMPhil - 06-11-2023

I saw that clip recently and I found a couple of news articles online from the time about it, but I have a hard time believing any newsreader would announce the death of the sitting President in such a casual manner even if it's just saying it as "unconfirmed" (especially if it was unconfirmed!).

Funny how he saves it and then immediately gives away what he almost said!!

There are plenty of examples of it being a rip and read, even the C4 Continuity Announcer has a go here

And this is clearly the LWT continuity studio on Central, but I'm not clear whether that is LWT's announcer or somebody from ITN who has made the trip to the South Bank
