That's Colin Baker, then of Thames news,  and later ITN. Not sure why he was in the LWT studios.

Well it was a Friday, so possibly something to do with that period where Thames provided LWT's news service? But why they would do it rather than ITN is strange.

I’m afraid I know nothing of C4/ITN arrangements in those days. Appears to be very late at night/early morning and again I wonder if ITN’s studio/production staff were tucked up at home?

As an aside you’ll note the ad break (the last of the evening) contained only Public service announcement type ‘stuff’. Where I worked the last C4 break was always scheduled with no ads to cover the possibility of an ad not being played out correctly earlier in the day for some reason or other - it could be re-inserted in the last break otherwise it would be filled with COI’s or somesuch etc as we see here. (Gosh, takes me back to my days in C4 local ITV presentation and programming up the ACR etc).

The second clip certainly appears to be LWT’s presentation studio - it’s an ITN journalist whose name I can’t remember it’s certainly not the continuity announcer. ITN was only a few minutes away in a cab.

The LWT/ITN/Central clip from Neil Miles has been online for some time, but having read this thread and watched the clip once again, I find it more interesting now that the film ending on the clip wasn’t actually networked:

Unfortunately, the London listings aren’t there, so it’s difficult to establish whether the same film was also shown on LWT. But we know it wasn’t shown on Granada or Yorkshire. So I’d be curious to know whether said Newsflash was networked, or whether other ITV regions inserted their own ITN Newsflash akin to the 1981 Granada Malcolm Brown clip.

I think there used to be a link between Real Radio Yorkshire and Calendar over what was on the bulletin.

BTW, Malcolm is one of the very nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

Always liked Malcolm's work. Does appear to suggest ITN weren't able to go on air themselves (and AFAIK, the film was only being shown locally at least)

There's a couple more examples online - in this instance, Charles Foster reading an OOV flash after a part-networked screening of The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Slightly OT but something I noticed from leafing through old listings was Granada's seeming reluctance to do short local bulletins of their own, outside Granada Reports at 6pm for years.

They only seem to have introduced a lunchtime news by the early 80s, thus getting the continuity team to start newsreading regularly (and come 1986, the move to Liverpool saw them go all out with bulletins throughout the day, even during schools programmes)

Was rather curious about seeing that for a long time, so thanks.

From what I've read, the anchor (Don Harrison) had huge doubts about it as he was briefed - and CNN (at least the main network) had already determined that it was a hoax, but somehow, his producers at Headline News had insisted it should go on air before getting any confirmation.

The bogus story was quickly removed from their computer systems (they were using a messaging tool called 'Read Me' apparently), which prompted one of the producers to again intervene before Harrison began to read it.

Probably doing some weekend cover at ITN, the same way some Thames announcers popped up elsewhere at the weekend

Colin is most famous for this piece to camera:

I would have thought its just a co-incidence that it's a Thames reporter doing it, he was probably just who was on shift at ITN that night.

Thames just did a news bulletin at 6pm, there wouldn't have been any responsibility after that and certainly not for news about the American President - way out of Thames' patch!

Presumably it was done from LWT as they had a studio and we're staffed and ITN weren't. If it had been the night before it might have been an ITN reporter in the Thames studio.... Thames and ITN were a walkable distance.

--

I wonder what staffing at ITN was in those days before 24 hour TV? They will almost certainly have been some sort of newsroom presence overnight, but without any TV network to provide for until 9:25 (until The Channel 4 Daily started) there'd be little point having anyone else

I love the way he is stopped from saying it, but then kind of says it anyway.

Just stop and move on, don't say what it was you were stopped from saying!
