Propped up by two reams of paper, no expense spared there!

I think you might be surprised at how some major studio production centres got ‘things’ on air - sometimes due to ingenuity, simple lack of time or that’s just how it was given the circumstances. Modesty prevents me from posting pictures of mainstream PSB programming getting to air via boxes of kit carefully balanced on upside down waste paper bins. You’d never do anything to jeopardise a programme getting to air but sometimes you just had to make it up and never never ever ever promise the production staff something you weren’t 100% sure you couldn’t deliver. Back then, what a time to be working behind the scenes in telly, never lost a programme.

I'm not sure if you would class this as gold, and this is from a particularly ropey recording, but I always remember these BBC London titles as I saw them whilst on a visit to London, but also because they were so visually simplistic that someone on TVF made a spot on recreation entirely in PowerPoint.

Yes those titles were awful and not a patch on what came before and after. The original BBC London titles still look great today

The simplicity is because they were a kit of parts so that they could create unique titles every evening with different visuals. They are as simple as they could be for the time considering they were made by the gallery every night.

There are several problems with them apart from looking very basic. The visuals are dull, the music is slow and the two don't work together unlike more crafted titles (though the greyhound shot used above just about works) . The graphic running along the bottom just had generic slogans like 'tune into 94.9'... which is vague enough by itself, but why are they telling me to tune into a radio station at the start of a TV programme? I assume the intention was for that to be used for different messages, but to be honest it's still to many different things as it is

I think it was, someone said it was a FCP template - which included the headlines sequence.

There's nothing inherently bad about them but as you say, they're just bland and badly timed, a nifty idea they could be changed daily on the fly, but the music is quite lethargic. That's not to say I don't like the music, but the sting for bulletins and the closing titles sting are the strongest components of it.

The headline graphics are in my view too much, but the regions and nations had a habit of using awful headline graphics in this era (See Newsline and their various DVE effects, Midlands Today, and Look Newcastle although theirs wasn't quite as garish as LDN's).

It was a strange time across the regions though, many were adopting or had adopted the LDN template, with subtle colour differences to the original product and LDN decided they had to be different and this was born as a result.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have a tour round ITN in 2001. They followed them around with a camera and filmed them and this is that footage.

They seem to be genuinely interested, although it reminds me of showing my parents around TV places I've worked at, it doesn't all go in. See for example how many times they explain the virtual studio. Also notable is that they didn't get the palace to not let her wear green, she could have been in the house of commons for the first time ever if not

Another Granada boxing curiosity from today in 1986 (still using the Autumn ident - no sign of Christmas graphics)

A withdrawal means they’ve abandoned plans to show a world heavyweight title fight live - even though a replacement’s stepped in and they’re showing highlights in the Saturday morning kids slot.

Add to that, the menu advertising a replacement programme is looking a bit wonky…

Always find it weird how Granada and Central LOVED the live boxing during this period in the middle of the night.
