RE: TV Social Media Pres Gold - lookoutwales - 22-02-2024

A rare glimpse of the other side of the Pres studio at Anglia House - to bring the sad news that Keith Martin has died at the age of 89.

One of the veterans of TV continuity, he freelanced at ABC, Anglia, Southern, TVS, LWT, BFBS among others - and even had a stint as a network announcer at the BBC.

He was still announcing at Anglia until around the mid-90s - but also worked for advertising agencies and as a voice coach (one of his clients was John Major)

Some years ago, he recorded an interview for a documentary marking the end of TV production at the former Rediffusion studios in Wembley.

And his recollections of working in pirate radio are worth a read, too.

"We're going all meta as @BBCArchive brings you an Open Air feature on, well..., the BBC Archive."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ivXNvKnTw

"Roy Sheppard was at Windmill Road in Brentford, and spoke to Anne Hanford (Head of TV Library) about the collection believed to be the biggest film and TV library in the world with an estimated 500,000 film reels and 300,000 items on tape.

"Clip taken from Open Air, originally broadcast on BBC One, Thursday 8 March, 1990."

I believe the whole archive site was effectively relocated a few miles up the road about 20 years later due to flooding and the buildings basically dropping to pieces.

I wonder how many people understood the reason why Chris Serle-fronted archive clip show "Windmill" was so named? I can't remember if it was regularly referred to or left as an Easter Egg (save for a couple of glimpses of a Windmill Road street sign in the title sequence)?

It had the windmill road street sign in the opening titles, but I agree, many people would not have understood the reason.

What sad news. I spent many a happy hour chatting to Keith over the years. He was great fun.

An interesting clip has been uploaded to TV Ark today, it’s a behind the scenes look at Central’s transmission area in 1992 with the CITV studio being located right next door (presumably in Central’s old in vision continuity studio).

That's an interesting video, but I am shocked that TV Ark appear to have run it through one of those AI upscale tools so everyone looks like an alien. Hope this isn't applied to all future uploads on the site.

They did it to the earlier Central to Carlton video too, I hope they stop doing it.

The desk in the presentation studio was dumped in the loading bay until at least 2010; I can't find my photos of it though sadly.

Ahh, that’s another of Terry Pearson’s uploads from his YT channel.

That package looked familiar - they had uploaded a longer version, as shown on Central News South (presumably part of a series called ‘Inside the Globe’)

The PotW edit left out an interview with Su Evans, who switched from announcing to being a Pres director (though she moved back into weather presenting much later on - her initial gig on UTV’s Good Evening Ulster, IIRC)

I can think of another one that's even worse- this report about the original incarnation of Sky Channel, which has also been interpolated to 50fps even though the original report was on film:

https://tvark.org/did-you-see-satellite-television-launch

There's lots of very odd movement artifacts in there as a result. It's really obvious in the clip of the launch of the channel itself, which is clearly from a not brilliant quality telerecording (presumably the report was edited on film, so the material had to be telerecorded to be spliced in).
