Came across this interesting explainer video of North Korean TV, including how they start up/sign off. Didn't realise they had 4 channels, including their own digital set-top box and on-demand service.

Really good vid - thanks. “On-demand service” - does that mean on Kim Jong-un’s demand? Watch his speeches or be executed? Big Grin

Might not be too far away from the truth actually.
Apparently if you don't fawn over the leader (or don't fawn "enough") or show enough "respect" you get shipped off to what looks like some form of National Service:

And of course we saw the national TV presenter in North Korea cry her eyes out on TV when Kim Jong-Il died in 2011 and she was announcing the news:

Looks like Granada put that promo together, judging by the presence of Jim Pope on V/O duties there.

The animation is technically impressive for a) 1973 and b) Granada. The "Christmas on" text uses a Scanimate for the animation: that was an early electronic effects device used A LOT by the US networks in the 70s. Granada Reports made its debut in 1973 and I think their titles used Scanimate as well.

From 1976, with surrounding Granada continuity, a fascinating film produced by HTV and the IBA about television technology in the 70s. Includes microwave links, transmitters, the presentation gallery , ENG, teletext and much more. Doesn’t go to deep into it all but just enough to hold the interest of the average viewer.

The opening titles to First Report (predecessor to News at One) are included. First time I’ve seen these, and I was surprised to find they are almost identical to the first News at One title sequence and use the same music.

You need to click through to YouTube to watch, but don’t let that discourage you from checking it out.

Seeing as it's New Year, here's Sky News bringing in 1992:

Not exactly TV pres per se, but rather something about capturing those things: A little gizmo that hangs off a computer to take high-quality [sic] captures, still or moving, in the mid-90s.

Did anyone used the PAL version of this thing to capture some ad breaks, per chance? Blush

RE: TV Social Media Pres Gold - i.h - 03-01-2023

I didn't use that, but my dad did buy one of the early versions of the WinTV, a PCI card that went inside the PC and could almost capture full 25fps video (it was perfectly smooth when watching TV but that's because it used a different technique). TV and FM tuner plus composite and svideo in.

The teletext support was rather neat too. My TV didn't have teletext so that was the way to do it.

I remember two forums ago when having "TV capture capability" was something to show off and it was an option to show on your posts Smile

Not quite actual TV, but Michael Spicer (Him Next Door) has put out this excellent take on regional TV of a certain era.
