Based on the clip, it's definitely not my favourite version, but I guess it is in-keeping with the style of other big fantasy themes over the last decade. Personally, I found that Gold's first versions were the right mix of original elements and orchestra and, if you were updating it, feel something more in the Britell Succession modern classical vibe could work nicely, but I suspect they want a more bombastic, eventy theme for a new bombastic, eventy-era.

Feels like a mix of the Series 4 and Series 5 theme to me. Murray Gold's style is big and bombastic, and this is certainly that. I don't think its my favourite version of the theme, as I love the Third Doctor's theme (Though I do have a soft spot for the theme they used for Jodie Whittaker's Doctor)

There is certainly a Gold style (he sure loves step-based melodies and is definitely fond of a leitmotif), but I'm not sure I'd say it is always big and bombastic. He definitely was from around Series 4 to the end of the Smith-era, when things got very brassy and 'epic', but I'd say the earlier series (particularly S1) and some of the Capaldi-era stuff was more pared back. Other Gold works, such as A Very English Scandal, can also be very minimalist. Compared to other TV composers, I've always found him to be quite adaptive in terms of genre and instrumentation.

I just think Gold doesn’t “get” the theme tune or how it works. Though I love his incidental music on the show.

I thought Akinola did a fabulous version of the theme for Jodie’s era.

The Akinola theme certainly gets a lot of love, but I've never particularly warmed to it - drums just too dominant. For me, Gold's themes just range the whole gamut - the 2005 version is possibly my favourite of all (I also have a particular fondness for the bassline of the 7B theme), but the Capaldi-era theme is probably my least favourite official theme (if we're not including the Delaware version).

Sarah Jane Adventures is 53 episodes. Torchwood is 41 episodes. Class is eight episodes. Total of 102. Which makes 835.

So the "over 800" claim is accurate, with nothing missing that exists.

You’re missing Confidential there, which is also being added in full, so another 102 episodes.

Bearing in mind it's a live orchestral version and not the proper studio mix, this sounds... fine to me. I like it. It's nothing revolutionary, and it has the air of a redux of prior themes, but this guy has arranged so many versions of the theme now... The law of diminishing returns applies, I still think his original couple of arrangements were his best. But it's absolutely fine and I'm sure it will sound great in its full context in the episodes. It certainly sounds better than the Capaldi theme and the latter Matt Smith theme, which were rather anaemic!

The concert also premiered two fully original compositions - the themes for the fiteenth Doctor and the new companion, Ruby. On first hearing, both sound quite great, the Doctor theme in particular is different to all previous Doctor themes.

Ruby's Theme is very nice and intriguing. Has a touch of Christopher Gunning's Poirot theme to it.

The 15th Doctor's theme, less so IMO. Feels a bit hollow. Action without heart or mystery. I hope it will develop and appear in various styles that give it more substance as the series play out.

Shepherd's Boy and all of the Heaven Sent episode OST is my favourite of all of Who's music. Murray Gold's pinnacle in my humble opinion!

It sounds like there could be an issue with the airing of the first few episodes on iPlayer (could doing a lot of the work in that sentence). The son of one of the original writers has withdrawn permission for the 'An Unearthly Child' serial (or 'The Tribe of Gum' as he and nobody else wants to call it) over an apparent dispute over related royalties. He claims that the episodes cannot be shown.

On first glance, this individual does not come across as the nicest of people in his first impression to me via his Twitter thread - he seem very worked up and angry at anything to do with this show and a little deluded (I highly doubt the BBC was involved in his father's death for starters). He has previously tried to cause a fuss with the BBC over the loyalties over the creation of the TARDIS a decade ago, and I don't see that anything came out of that. And if I had to bet, I'd say the Unearthly Child epsiodes will appear on iPlayer on November 1st.

Once again, all down to money - even after all these years - I wonder what "pittance" was offered to him by BBC Studios, i bet it was more than most people earn in a year.
