RE: Doctor Who - JMT1985 - 22-01-2024

When you film so far in advance of transmission, it becomes inevitable for a lot of things to leak - Season 1 and the 2024 Christmas special is already filmed, and they are making their way through filming Season 2, before we even have Season 1 first episode aired - is this the first time Doctor Who has filmed their episodes so far in advance?

This era is the first time I think that episodes have been filmed so far in advance, usually filming would finish a few months before the first episode aired (S13/Flux for example finished filming in August 2021 and starting airing at the end of October), whereas now as we saw with the 60th Specials. episodes are in the can for over a year before airing.

IIRC, RTD mentioned in the commentary for The Church on Ruby Road that the main reason why scripts are done so far in advance now is because of budgeting, so they can make the most of every penny

There’s much more than 2 seasons…

Even if you consider the 2005 revamp a separate show, there must be at least 12-13 seasons at this point.

The 2024 series has reset the numbering to season 1 once again, so the upcoming 2024 series is the 14th series since the revival in 2005, but will be officially called Season 1 (and series 14 and season 40 by those who haven't reset the numbering).

So, Season 1 in 2024 (already filmed) and Season 2 in 2025 (currently filming).

RE: Doctor Who - JAS84 - 23-01-2024

Yeah. Probably simpler to use what the comic book world calls legacy numbering, and call it season 40. No confusion that way! They probably dubbed it a new season 1 because Disney+ doesn't have the previous 39 seasons (which are on BritBox and Max in the US).

I suspect that the average viewer doesn't care what number they give to the series. They just want to know how to locate something and (if necessary) how it fits in with the production sequence.

When you've got a programme which has run for 40 series, perhaps just naming them from 's1963, Ep1' through to 's2023, Ep3' would be better?

This is all very encouraging. The latest figures for Ncuti's first solo outing on Christmas Day are also good at 7.49m.

RE: Doctor Who - Rdd - 02-02-2024

To add to the season numbering, er, discussion, RTE has decided they are Season 23!!!! Random. (Or perhaps not. Possibly someone was listening to the poster above and mean to call them “Season 2023”).
