I know of one instance where a deal was eventually done for a very short excerpt of one Beatles song in a news piece (so not even an entertainment show), but it took a lot of work even to get that.

I was going off Charlie Brooker's piece on Screenwipe. Of course that was way back in 2006.

Remember that piece well and now wonder how they managed to use it. I don’t *think* there’s been a major change, but things can over the years. I was at the Beeb at the time (although in engineering rather than production) and I think I remember hearing around music usage it was something like “almost anything but the Beatles”. Could be they’re just much more careful now, and Apple are more on top of checking.

Sure I’ve read in the past that one of the things that made sure Apple were very strict on song usage (although they always were) was all the way back when John Hughes used ‘Twist and Shout’ in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and then dubbed a load of horns onto the track.

What hasn’t changed is that it was always for UK broadcast (and now streaming) only. International versions and commercial releases have always needed to clear music (impossible or way too expensive) or replace it with library alternatives (what actually happens).

RE: Doctor Who - XIII - 12-04-2024

Cold Case, the American crime drama couldn't be released on DVD because it used a lot of music that was fine on broadcast but very expensive for physical media. Not sure if it has been able to be streamed.

Yes, the TOTP footage is intact in 'The Chase' on the Season 2 Blu-ray in the UK, which was issued quite recently, but is entirely excised on international editions. Ditto for the DVD release before that. Is it on iPlayer?

While this is probably at risk of causing this line of discussion to end up in its own thread, another example of when TV shows couldn't use pop music on the soundtrack was in the original series of Knight Rider, when they used soundalike perfomers and singers to cover popular songs as it was far cheaper than using the original songs.

For example, the Tina Turner song "We Don't Need Another Hero" used in Ep1 of S4 when KITT is being rebuilt after being trashed* earlier in the episode.

I uploaded a clip here, due to copyright police algorithms on both YT and DailyMotion . . .

(* KITT's "Molecular Bonded Shell" had been neutralised, causing KITT to get smashed up by a "huge armored vehicle" called The Juggernaut. )

The BBC officially confirms that Varada Sethu will become a companion in season 2 / series 15. Whilst the speculation was that Mille Gibson was sacked and Sethu replaces her, it appears they will both be onscreen together through the series.

RE: Doctor Who - Strange - 12-04-2024

Suspect this has been announced because all three will be doing some public filming. They’re close to wrapping season 2.

RE: Doctor Who - JAS84 - 12-04-2024

You can understand the mix-up - two female companions at the same time is unheard of in the modern era. Eccleston and Tennant both had one woman and one man at most (Rose/Jack, Rose/Mickey), same for Smith (Amy/Rory), and Capaldi (Bill/Nardole), while Whittaker's Doctor had one woman and two men (Yaz/Ryan/Graham), though of course was a woman herself. The last time there was two female companions together in the TARDIS, not counting the big DW/SJA/Torchwood team up at the end of Tennant's third season, was Nyssa and Tegan, when Peter Davison was the Doctor! That's over 40 years ago.

That would make sense, but the speculation began just ahead of Varada filming in public back in January. Why this wasn't announced then but announced now I guess we will never know, but odd that it wasn't then, especially with some of the speculation being quite disrepectful to Mille that could have been prevented.

I did read a tweet or something recently saying the final block of filming was just about to get underway.

Just to play devil’s advocate, it doesn’t say they’ll be on screen together through the series. Only that the Doctor will have two companions in Series 2.

They may well be, but the way it’s written it’s just as likely they’re only in a handful of episodes together, or even just the one episode which was being read on the day these pictures were taken.
