Your use of a male pronoun in that sentence got me wondering...

It is my understanding that Gatwa uses gender-neutral pronouns (they/them) in real life, so I'm wondering whether their incarnation of the Doctor will also self-identify in non-binary terms?

Gatwa has previously referred to the Doctor character (their own incarnation or otherwise) as "they/them" in interviews.

No, Ncuti Gatwa uses he/him pronouns.

RE: Doctor Who - Jon - 11-05-2023

I think the confusion lies in that the he’s apparently used the they/them pronouns to describe the Doctor, I haven’t read the article but that seems like the most sensible way to describe the Doctor as an entity as there have now been male and female doctors. They may write it into the script that his Doctor
identifies as they/them although potentially that’d create some criticism not only from the right wing media, which they wouldn’t be bothered about but also potentially that they didn’t use a non-binary actor for a non-binary role.

RE: Doctor Who - Former Member 406 - 11-05-2023

It is of course perfectly possible to phrase dialogue in a way that avoids *any* pronouns (gendered or non-gendered).

E.g. "Where did he/she/they go?" versus "Where did the Doctor go?", etc.

So, there doesn't necessarily need to be loads of "their/they/them" in *all* of the places where he/she/him/her/his/hers might otherwise go.

RE: Doctor Who - JAS84 - 11-05-2023

Gatwa using they/them when talking about the Doctor makes sense, considering we now know the Doctor has changed gender at least three times.

RE: Doctor Who - Scrotnig - 12-05-2023

Yes. If you are referring to The Doctor generically, as opposed to a specific incarnation, “they/them” is now really the only correct way to do it.

I should also add, Gatwa looks born to play the character regardless of which costume is worn.

I gather some of what should be release later today has already been publicly leaked, which is a shame to hear.

Yes, I won't share anything here, but the alleged episode titles for the three specials have been shared, along with a new (fairly non-spoilery) image. They're purported to have been found in the source code/API of the official Doctor Who website, but have not yet been published. The BBC might want to look into that, because that's also how at least one of the Flux chapter titles was leaked ahead of time.
