RE: US Midterms 2022 - Newsroom - 03-11-2022

CNN have finally dropped their plans for the Midterms but there is no sign of Wolf Blitzer taking a prominent role in its coverage, just added as an anchor alongside everyone else.

Looks like Chris Wallace will finally be utilised after joining the network with no steady role as such.

Yeah Wolf is not actually part of the main coverage this time round, he is presenting from 12pm-4pm ET with Erin Burnett on the 8th and 9th.

It's interesting to see they are continuing the split between Washington and New York on the main coverage this time round presumably with Jake in Washington and Anderson in New York. Probably not surprised though given that it has been a regular occurrence on CNN now.

Using both locations worked very well at the last Election and considering it lasted close to a week was a decision well made. First time Wolf has taken a back seat in decades!

NBC has published a behind-the-scenes fly through of how its election sets will look like on tomorrow. Studio 1A (used for network and NBC News Now coverage) has got a shiny new floor covering, whilst MSNBC's side of Studio 3A has got some flooring updates and a new anchor desk.

A CBS staffer has published a sneak peek of their election coverage set. Almost everything of the CBS Mornings set is retained, except for a hideous-looking anchor desk. Their coverage will air simultaneously on the network and the CBS News streaming network, continuously live in all time zones from 5pm up until 2am. Network coverage will start at 8pm and continue during prime time, with affiliates able to continue taking coverage after their late local news, Colbert and Corden.

ABC's coverage will be co-anchored by David Muir (his first election as anchor) and Linsey Davis. Expect TV3 as it is to be used. Coverage starts at 7pm on ABC News Live and will be followed by prime time coverage on ABC, the ABC TVE app and Hulu. Former Univision anchor María Elena Salinas, former NJ governor Chris Christie, and former Democratic chair Donna Brazille will be among the contributors to their special.

Fox will not air coverage on its main network, instead airing its normal prime time schedule, though affiliates can break-in to air their special election programmes. Fox News and Fox Business will simulcast an election night results show with Bret Baier, Martha MacCallum, Bill Hemmer, Shannon Bream and Harris Faulkner (with FNC and FBN also bringing its own commentators); it will be followed by overnight updates with Trace Gallagher until Fox & Friends First starts.

PBS' plans are being focused on more journalism and less punditry, including what is expected to be Judy Woodruff's last major election as anchor and managing editor:

Wolf Blitzer had been already demoted when the pre-Biden administration reorganization was announced last year (still during the Zucker era), which made Tapper the main Washington-based anchor and, therefore, anchor of its election results shows.

Yeah fully aware of that. The narrative that played out was that Wolf was 'handing the baton over' so to speak after decades in the roll, much akin to the Dimbleby/Edwards scenario.

Wolf now features in updated CNN Midterm promo alongside all the other anchors taking part in the marathon coverage with the exception of Jim Scuitto.

CBS is going all-in with AR and VR, including a massive AR display covering the facade outside the Minskoff Theatre, and digitally removing the ceiling of the studio to leverage live virtual views of Times Square and the Capitol. The hideous anchor desk is due to CBS also adding AR data elements for live air.

Wolf should have continued in his role until retirement. Tapper does not have the experience or gravitas of Blitzer for such an occasion.

That I can totally agree on. Those Key Race Alerts will never be the same!
