RE: American News Presentation - Medianext.MX - 05-01-2023

KCAL’s new morning show is on-air today, at the best possible moment to get some viewership: record breaking severe weather is impacting Southern California and the station is focusing the first show to news and Next Weather team coverage. This same situation got KTLA into the hotspot back in 1992, when its morning news went from none to big ratings winner as viewers began switching to 5 thanks to the lack of live coverage by the network affiliates.

Still, the new broadcast has had some first day teething problems, including faulty audio at times, picture quality issues and the previous CBSN Local ticker being used for a while on the streaming network until disappearing. The open retains Brian Lee as V/O.

A graphical pull-out replaced the programme DOG later on the show, featuring Next Weather radar images live in the corner. It is also being used by KPIX.

Finally, NewscastStudio published a sizzle with the new CBS News Local themes, which are replacing the Enforcer at the O&Os; the themes were all composed by Antfood (which also did the CBS mnemonic).

Variety's take on the rebranding, including confirming KCAL News will be the brand for both stations' newscasts going forward:

There has been already a first use of the assignment desk space for breaking news, and even a live shot with The Weather Channel's severe weather superhuman Jim Cantore.

RE: American News Presentation - Medianext.MX - 05-01-2023

NewscastStudio has gotten an exclusive Q&A with CBS News co-president Wendy McMahon and SVP of Design Casey Kespohl on the new look.

Tidbits:

Branding will be assigned in a market-to-market basis, with some stations going for the call letters (KPIX and KCAL), others retaining their existing brands and other going with the streaming network brand

New graphics mean also a switch to new Chyron Prime workflows

CBS management is helping stations how to use new graphics and music for their content

The package will be syndicated to non-CBS O&Os in the future
Wow. That's quite a u-turn from everything being branded as CBS News Los Angeles to the CBS name essentially disappearing from local TV news in LA.

I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall during those meetings.

I think they should resurrect the famous Jerry Dunphy opening line...."From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California, Good Evening!" That ties the station to its legacy presenter but without it dripping in nostalgia. (Think the continued use of the famous CIRCLE 7 pins worn by WABC / KABC/ WLS anchors for decades)

Here's a quick shot at the 7am hour of the new morning broadcast:

And an inside look on one of the elements of the new format, the in-studio assignment desk (which they call The Desk). One of KCAL's news staples, live helicopter coverage of police chases and major incidents, will continue too; their news chopper has been renamed SkyCAL to reflect the new look:

That's good to see they aren't going to force a naming convention on all their stations. Some stations like WBZ, WCCO, KDKA have a stronger brand and don't use CBS 4 or 2 in KDKA's place and the CBS name is really minimal so having them keep their call letter branding would make more sense.  (That are they good preforming stations)   Does make me wonder if KYW in Philadelphia might end up keeping their "Eyewitness News" name after all, but not the CBS3 part.  I do at least like they understand each market is different.

It was smart to keep KCAL's name, but shed KCBS' if they had to choose only one they chose the right one , the one that's more noted in the market.

Just watching a bit of today's show and The Desk is actually quite a nifty idea. It's basically one reporter who can front up all the kind of stories where they normally have to scrape around for someone to do a two-way from the newsroom.  Plus the assignment editor is there for a bit of behind-the-scenes colour on the current and future stories they're covering.

The post-7am show has a nice feel to it. I'll be interested to see how it does - it's a third local morning show in a market that already has 2 local and 3 national ones that have mostly been around for a very long time (with the exception of CBS Mornings). Do any other markets have that many?

The Denver Colorado market has 4. It also has the unusual arrangement where two stations that are sister stations airing their own separate newscasts in the morning. KWGN does 4:30-9am, KUSA with sister station ,KTVD, does it from 4:30-7am on both and 7-9am on KTVD, and KMGH has 4:30-7am and on sister station KCDO 7-9am. KDVR , the sister station to KWGN does their own news cast 4:30am-Noon.

The Philadelphia market, since WFMZ counts as part of the market they have 3 post 7am newscasts. (WTXF, WPHL and WFMZ)

I think Kansas City and Salt Lake City , where they have each have one station that least does the 7-8am and the other two do longer shows.

RE: American News Presentation - London Lite - 08-01-2023

Out of all the KCAL Mornings hours, it's the final hour which I liked because there's more presentation away from the desk, but I can't fault the line ups of the pre 7am and 7-10 bulletins.
