This might look inferior to their previous set (and it is in a certain form indeed), which dated back to 2012, but that set (one of the first generation Devlin HD sets), which had an enormous touch-screen whose use was downplayed over the years, had started to show its age. Glad KCRG got a more custom design and didn't get the standard Gray set. But, when seen on-air, the set just looks like a cable-access TV set, and the layered design reminds me of the KMSP set, but poorly imitated.

Rebranding as 13 News but still getting the ugly old Gray graphics hub package (at least they took one of the better ones). Hoping this is just a temporary measure given Gray is slowly preparing to launch the new Matt Quinn standardized graphics package which would mix elements of the Meredith standardized graphics, the Atlanta News First pack, and the WOIO designs.

The original set was built in 2018, nearing the end of Nexstar's ownership. It was sold following the Tribune merger later that year, and ultimately went to Circle City in 2019. Here's the old set's debut:

It looks like this isn't going to be the only part of the "new" set. WISH is releasing this promo for a "set reveal" Monday. Maybe they are showing off the rest of the set update on-air that day.

What is permanent is these hideous graphics, which otherwise are an improvement on the former Nexstar graphics. It's a recolored version of the WJAX/WFOX graphics from RenderOn. You can tell so from this comparison:

Guess NBC News stuff goes here?
One day after CNN announces their upcoming daytime changes MSNBC is announcing theirs from February 13.

They've found a replacement after almost a year for their 11am ET slot, by moving the current 10AMET anchor Jose Diaz Balart to 11AMET, Chris Jansing is getting 2 hours from 1-3pmet, Katy Tur moves to 3pm ET.

Weekends have been set up too: Velshi gets the 10amet-12pmet , Johnathan Capehart moves to Saturday and Sunday at 9AMET, Katie Phang at 8AMET.

Halle Jackson is leaving MSNBC but her NBC NEWS NOW show is expanding to 2 hours. It's currently on at 5pmet and repeats at 6pmet.

Forgot this: Gadi Schwartz (host of their Snapchat digest Stay Tuned) will fill Joshua Johnson's position as host of NBC News Now's analysis show Now Tonight. The show will move to the Los Angeles bureau as a result of this, as Schwartz is also a LA-based correspondent for NBC News.

In the case of the MSNBC changes, the 10am hour is most likely to go to Ana Cabrera, but she won't be taking it immediately because of the non-compete clause she got when leaving CNN. Rotating anchors will fill the slot in the interim.

Nexstar’s local stations have stopped live streaming of local newscasts from Thursday. The reason: pressure from cable companies. The catch-up of the shows won’t be available until two hours after the original live broadcast, and the live stream section of their websites will offer delayed telecasts of all shows, but breaking news will retain live streaming.



Some larger stations with full-flown streaming offerings, like KTLA (KTLA+) and WFLA (WFLA Now) are exempted (for now) from this corporate mandate. Scott Jones’ insider website FTVLive had broken the news last month.

A similar situation had been attempted by Nexstar. They attempted to make the live streams of its local stations exclusive to participating subscribers of local cable companies in late 2020; the stations which took the trial were the WBRE/WYOU duopoly in Scranton and WTNH in New Haven. This experiment was unsuccessful, resulting in protests from site users and out-of-market locals, and lasted less than two months before lifting the paywall.

It seems that it's WGN, KTLA, and KRON who all have TV streaming apps are the only ones who still have live streaming allowed.  What a mess though, since everyone has been investing in their streaming, Nexstar has been bad it in the first place. The only reason why some of the stations have live streams was they were owned by someone else before and they decided to let them continue.  Only three of them have smart TV apps. PIX11 had a TV app when they were owned by Scripps , now they have a 2-hr delay feed.   Almost every other station group is better at this than them, even Sinclair.

When they announced the merger with Tribune Media, CEO Perry Sook told the industry that the company would evolve into a “digital-first” company, which would adapt the Tribune mindset to their legacy stations and those acquired by Media General; additionally, Nexstar owns the content platform provider Lakana, which was formed from the merger of three legacy providers, and had been buying many different websites and Internet-related companies in recent years, including some former Tribune websites and digital newspaper The Hill. Still, there has been little to no progress on doing such, as you said, with the local stations. The bigger groups have been going all in with streaming: CBS with its local streaming networks (available virtually everywhere on all Paramount streaming services), which has been imitated in some way by ABC, NBC and Telemundo; Fox with a robust local streaming presence and investing on national streaming networks which are connected with the local stations; Sinclair has not only live streaming on its local websites, but also offers a free streaming service, Stirr, which also offers the group’s free digital networks; Tegna and Hearst have also launched their own networks, which are more lifestyle based but they also offer some of their local newscasts; Scripps has an increasing number of streaming offerings, not only local, but national based (cue Scripps News, Court TV and related versions of its digital networks) and even Allen Media has put its local stations into the streamer it inherited from The Weather Channel, Local Now.

Sinclair’s Little Rock ABC station KATV has moved from its longtime downtown Fourth Street studios into a renovated warehouse building in the trendier Riverdale district up north; initially set to move in 2020, but stalled due to the pandemic, the first broadcast there was made this evening. With the move, they got a version of the new standard Sinclair set, which was designed in-house. Even if it is a cookie cutter set, it looks fine for today’s standards.
