Back to NewsNation, their New York studio, neighbouring WPIX, opened on Tuesday with quite an enthusiastic outlook for the channel:

Their most recent designs for KEYE also have this element present; and other sets made for other stations (KRNV, KATV, WWMT...) have a similar design look. These sets were designed in-house by Sinclair's newly created Scenic Group, led by Mark Nadeau. Although the sets might look quite garish and really corporate/cookie-cutter, they are decent work for an in-house scenic design team (remember Nexstar's Dalek Desk?)

The first stations affected are WGXA in Macon (ABC/Fox), WACH in Columbia (Fox) and their duopoly in Flint (WEYI/WSMH). This will lead to some of the newscasts in non-key slots being replaced by simulcasts of The National Desk. In the case of WEYI, the morning news, 5pm and weekend evening broadcasts are being reportedly culled.
Staying with Sinclair, seems like there's more casualties from the local news cut: WNWO Toledo (NBC) and KTVL Medford (CBS, CW Plus).

[Edit] Confirmed by WNWO.
Quote:NBC 24 is changing the way we produce news in Toledo to ensure our long-term success.

Beginning May 15, The National Desk, which provides real-time national and regional news from Sinclair's television stations across the U.S., will air during our regularly scheduled news time periods.

RE: American News Presentation - sky303 - 28-04-2023

Instead of doing Toledo news from South Bend Indiana, they'll just air the Nation's news from Washington D.C . on the Toldeo station.  I didn't see anything about WOLF-TV in Scranton, wonder if that newscast will be cut, it uses the same team that did WNWO's news... in South Bend... especially same anchors

Now KMEG/KPTH in Siouxland (CBS/Fox) are pulling the plug as well:
Quote:BY MID MAY THERE WILL BE TWO FEWER LOCAL TV STATIONS PROVIDING LOCAL NEWS ON YOUR AIRWAYS.

CBS-14, FORMERLY KNOWN AS KMEG ALONG WITH THEIR SISTER STATION KPTH WILL END THEIR LOCAL NEWSCASTS ON MAY 12TH.

THEY ARE THE LATEST STATIONS SINCLAIR BROADCASTING HAS DROPPED LOCAL NEWS AT THIS YEAR.

SINCLAIR IS ALSO REPORTEDLY ENDING LOCAL NEWS IN PENSACOLA, FLORIDA, MOBILE ALABAMA AND TOLEDO, OHIO, AS WELL AS A STATION COVERING NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHERN OREGON.
(KSCJ-FM)

WPMI is also affected since last month; only evening newscasts were retained. Some staff was reassigned to cross-river sister WEAR.

In respect of Northern California, it is KAEF in Arcada/Eureka; they now simulcast many of KRCR's newscasts with The National Desk and syndicated shows:

RE: American News Presentation - W. Knight - 01-05-2023

And as if the list isn't long enough yet, KPTM (Fox, The CW) in Omaha and WGFL Gainsville (CBS, MyTV) are reportedly on the chop as well:

Moving on to CBS News streaming, a new daily politics programme, America Decides, started tonight from DC bureau. It replaces of Red & Blue, and acts as a build-up for John Dickerson's Prime Time:
https://www.youtube.com/live/7dVUQl4KW-c?feature=share

In their own words:
Quote:CBS News executives are betting that younger audiences want more depth and nuance in news programming. “In this polarized environment, politics often gets a bad rap. People say, ‘I’m not interested in politics,’” says [Anthony] Galloway. “I think what people are not interested in is that fight. They are tired of the on person on the left and the one person on right, generally people on the extremes arguing with each other. You don’t learn a lot from that type of programming.”

[Robert] Costa, who joined CBS News in 2022 after a four-year stint moderating PBS’ “Washington Week,” believes viewers will flock to a hard-news program. “The audience wants respect,” he says. “If you can show the audience respect and bring them really good, fresh information, you can build an audience.”

In weeks to come, says Galloway, executives may look at opportunities to take “America Decides” on the road to debate and convention sites. On some important evenings, he says, there may be plans that involve both CBS News’ streaming and broadcast programs and ways to get audiences to move back and forth between them. “With some of the races last year, it was really effective,” he says. “I think we are going to try to invest and double down on that.”

RE: American News Presentation - London Lite - 01-05-2023

What is Sinclair doing wrong that other local station groups are able to do better with regards to sponsorship of segments in their bulletins?

You have Gray pumping money into stations for news since their acquisition of Meredith, ensuring that the actual newscast is a worthy product that sponsors want to pay for segments on the bulletin while maintaining a decent level of news provision, while Sinclair have gone for a national/regional bulletin to fill what were local news bulletins in their less viable markets.

And that's before the fact Sinclair for some reason like to use awful pushbacks on their morning shows where it's easier to see what the weather is than the anchors or the reporters who are providing the actual news product.

Other groups are trying other ways to ensure their local news product is worth more, Nexstar have removed live simulcasts of the majority of their newscasts in smaller markets except for a select few that pay their way including WFLA, WPIX, KFLA and WGN.

I think this is just the longer-term trend for small market TV in the United States, where smaller cities won't be able to support 3-4 news-producing TV stations anymore. Sinclair's financial situation is just making the problem worse and speeding up the process.

I won't be surprised if we see the likes of Scripps News, NewsNation (Nexstar), or even CBS's local news lab replacing weaker performing newscasts (or entire news operations) in their respective station groups - nationally-oriented station group newscasts with opt-outs for local news (that may or may not be live). In CBS's case, they could even offer it as a service for their smaller non-owned affiliate stations if those owners decide doing local news on their own is too cost prohibitive.
