Also, am I imagining things or does that camera used outside also have a small autocue/teleprompter screen on it?

There’s a door right next to the window, so it’s very easy to quickly go outside from the studio. Also, they do segments from the plaza regularly meaning everything is pretty much set up ready to go.

Interesting to see Today follow GMA with round graphics - looking forward to them getting squared off in a couple of years when circular graphics eventually go out of fashion again!

Thanks for this. I notice there's a load of security around outside, so presumably nobody can easily interfere with the camera operator. Interesting.

So you end up with staff still having to go to work and broadcast to a tiny audience, which on some of the Fox O&Os can be from 4am to 11am.

WTVT in Tampa Bay have found a way of broadcasting the local morning shows using DTT. They're using sub-channel 13.3 usually used by classic game show network BUZZR during Women's World Cup matches in SD.

I don't know if other Fox O&Os have been able to acquire space on their own DTT muxes as an alternative?

Most of the Fox O&Os are co-owned with other full-power stations (duopolies), and in the last few years, many of them have adopted the practice of sliding their newscasts over to the second station whenever they're pre-empted for any reason, especially sports. A few years ago, KTVU rebranded KICU TV-36 as KTVU Plus to signify that practice, and a few other O&Os have now rebranded their second stations as "Plus" stations as well.

The Women's World Cup schedule is also affecting late local news on the west coast. Coverage of the match the other night began at 11pm PDT.

And a lot of them have been weakened to do just that as well, especially those ex-UPN and WB stations in strong markets like KCOP Los Angeles/Fox 11 Plus. I'd bet WWOR in New York is going down the same path sooner or later.

Onto other news... WINK, severely suffered from floods during Hurricane Ian last year, finally secured a new home for 18.5 mil:

KTIV in Sioux City (NBC) is the latest one to update to the GrayOne package, which they heralded with a news spot detailing the change:

We also got to see the change of mechanisms behind the scenes, as detailed in their article (https://www.ktiv.com/2023/08/06/ktiv-launches-production-changes-brand-new-on-air-look/ ):
Quote:In April of 2022, talks began with KTIV management and KTIV’s owners, Gray Television, about the construction of a brand-new production center. This would require a major renovation and rebuild of KTIV. The new layout was drawn up and the first sledgehammer was swung in January.

Construction would come in several phases. Walls would come down, and new ones would go up. Our engineers had to maintain current technology while building and installing new technology.

Gone is the old production center. In its place is a brand-new look for the production center, and KTIV’s newscasts.

New audio equipment, new computers, new software, and new graphics enhance the way KTIV brings you the news.

“It’s actually really rewarding seeing how everything is looking knowing what we’ve done to get to this point,” said Alexis Patterson, KTIV’s Chief Engineer.

Our production crew would go through weeks of training to be able to use the new software and still put on our regularly scheduled newscasts.

Also, an antique still in use: WHAS in Louisville (ABC/Tegna) is still using the inauagural graphics to opt in to World News Now overnight, albeit all stretched out:

In comparison, this is how WNN currently looks (from the same station!):

What's strange is that WNYW and KTTV very rarely move their newscasts to their second stations. They simply just delay or pre-empt. On Thursday night, when Women's World Cup disrupts normal programming again, WNYW is planning to run their normal 10pm news at 11pm after the match or later, and KTTV has canceled their usual 5 and 6pm newscasts. Meanwhile, KTVU and KCPQ will still be airing news at their usual times on their "Plus" stations. KTVU will still do local news on KTVU Plus even when there's major network news taking over KTVU, such as the State of the Union address.

That explains why the current WINK set is still so basic looking nearly a year on from Ian and also confirms that unlike WBBH, they're not selling remaining the only mainstream station in the Fort Myers/Naples market to stay under local ownership.

The new station building is more inland near SW Florida Intl Airport.
