RE: American News Presentation - Medianext.MX - 17-08-2023

KMOV, the Gray CBS affiliate in St. Louis, has started to transition its moniker from News 4 to... First Alert 4. Although the News 4 moniker is still used in many places (including graphics), anchors and reporters have started to introduce and close segments under the new moniker.

This move apes what Gray did after taking over Raycom station KOSA (also a CBS affiliate) did after the takeover: plastering First Alert branding into all news and information departments (First Alert News, First Alert Sports, First Alert Weather...)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaxvRc_Go8M

Mass cuttings have started at Scripps: the company has reorganized its local TV operations, laying off most of the station’s general managers, and installing centralized, regionalized management:

Kathleen Choai (from KSHB/KC) now will also oversee KXXV, KRIS/KZTV, WRTV, KJRH and KMTV

Anita Helt (from KNXV/Phoenix) now will also oversee KGUN, KERO, KSBY, KGTV and KTNV

Nick Nicholson (from WFTS/Tampa) now will also oversee WSFL, WPTV, WTXL, KATC and WFTX

Lyn Plantinga (from WTVF/Nashville) now will also oversee WCPO, WEWS, WKBW and WLEX

Joe Poss (from WTMJ/Milwaukee) now will also oversee WGBA, WXYZ, KOAA, WMAR, WSYM and WXMI

Joe Saunders (VP of Scripps Local Media ops and who manages the Montana Television Network, led by KTVQ/Billings) will now also oversee KIVI, KSTU, KMGH, KOAA, WMAR, WTVR and WTKR
However, everything is not lost: each station will have a “station manager”, which will oversee mostly local news and commercial responsibilities.

Although the move is also business-minded, there are plans for Scripps to increasingly and deeply integrate local news programming into the helm of the Scripps News national division and network, already done in an extent by merging the Newsy and Local Media Washington bureaus into a single one, as well as the formation of a network news division to operate the digital FTA network. Since late June, more integration was implemented, including stations' airing national reports from the service, as well as a 30- or 60-minute simulcast block of the network schedule in the afternoon, replacing the internally-syndicated shows The List and The Upside (formerly Afternoon Focus, produced by Scripps News itself). Cox-owned KIRO in Seattle has also signed up for the syndicated service.

Additional changes in the long-term involve eliminating some anchor positions at the local stations, as well as beefing up heavily on MMJs (including giving substantial pay raises), eliminating the chief meteorologist title and placing all meteorologists under the purview of the assistant news director.

FIRST ALERT 4 News, First to Alert you to news... ummm wait.

Along the lines of Gray, seems like the 5pm slot on WANF has a dedicated name: Live at 5.
https://youtu.be/hiLkuNBS1UY
TVNewsTalk also described a new opening for it with more 3D elements (https://forums.tvnewstalk.net/topic/19151-atlanta-news-first/?do=findComment&comment=289046 ), but I couldn't find any footage online.

Meanwhile, several ABC O&Os are launching a 10am newscast, replacing the syndicated Tamron Hall Show that'll be moved to the afternoons:

RE: American News Presentation - London Lite - 17-08-2023

WPVI Philidelphia are launching an all-female line-up on the new Action News at 10am which launches on September 11th.

Anchors are Alicia Vitarelli, Alyana Gomez and Nydia Han with meteorologist Karen Rogers who will also stay on Action News Mornings.

Even the producers on this bulletin are women.

Anchor Alicia Vitarelli posted on Facebook that the bulletin will have "news, real conversations, love and laughter." so I'd expect this bulletin to be more female skewed than other Action News bulletins.

Another Florida station is on the move: WSVN is leaving Miami’s North Bay Village to move to Broward County. The new Sunbeam Television HQ and broadcast center is located in Miramar, close to rival WTVJ, at the Miramar Park of Commerce (a Sunbeam propierty) in the southeast corner of the Florida Turnpike exit onto Red Road.

The new facility will have 71,272 square feet and two levels, including two studios (one for news and another for production), a newsroom and weather center, various galleries and offices, and a staff canteen. The new headquarters, designed by Rees International, is designed for emergency broadcasting during a Cat 5 hurricane, being built on elevated land, with two generators, a fuel tank and a backup AC.

The move, which will be complicated, might happen within the next three years, with new equipment being installed and the North Bay Village facility still functioning until the last day, according to Andy Ansin. He also wants to boost WSVN’s payroll by hiring 30 additional jobs dedicated to the suburb’s residents, whilst also emphasizing the central location of the new facility.

The project is connected to a big redevelopment of the Miramar Park of Commerce into a high-end mixed-use project, similar to one Sunbeam’s realty division is pursuing at the North Bay Village site, including 2,800 apartments, a hotel, and about 300,000 square feet of commercial space, including about 40,000 for a grocer, 40,000 of entertainment and 120,000 square feet of restaurants.

I wonder, however: their ground-breaking Newsplex will survive the big move?

RE: American News Presentation - London Lite - 18-08-2023

I doubt WSVN will dump their OTT sets and graphics when they move.

RE: American News Presentation - mouseboy33 - 18-08-2023

As long as Sunbeam owns it and the Ansin family is involved. WSVN will continue to use the tabloid look. The wild graphics and pounding music is WSVN. Big screens and flashy sets is their signature. These days everything basically is flat and the music is minimal and WSVN basically said: Bump That! We're doing own thing." So if they suddenly turn into a BBC-clone, they would loose their signature style and their unique point of difference from the crowd. What if suddenly the The SUN or Mirror overnight turned into Telegraph or Times clones. Im sure their readership wouldnt be too happy. I think most people outside the US fail to understand the fierce competition in most tv markets. Especially a market the Miami-Ft Lauderdale market. ITS INTENSE. Thats why things in local news is a bit flashier and in your face. And they promote and brand everything. They are massive, direct competition. In Miami-Ft Lauderdale, you have all the English channels battling and the market leaders are the Spanish language stations for eyeballs. Thats why Miami has always been an outlier in the US local tv landscape to this day. TV news in South/Central America is flashy and sexy and loud. For Miami, add in the Latin flair and the Miami Vice vibe from the 80s early 90s. You kinda get where WSVN and many of the Miami stations get their look and tone.

WSVN maybe flashy, but its often thought of amongst local tv journalists, as a great place to work. Because they dont get bogged down in stupidity. Its a station that is extremely news-heavy, and they present NEWS. And a lot of it. So if you want to do great stories, WSVN often gives their reporters the time and space to do it. They have a huge news team, the biggest in South Florida. And they have hours to fill. And they can basically do what they want because its not owned by some big massive company that owns hundreds of stations with tiny budgets, churning our corporated mandated presentation. The other major station Sunbeam owns is WHDH Boston.

So the move away from their current home is a big move. Apparently the infrastructure on Broadcast Key has aged out and Ansin and Sunbeam is going to make a mint building a new residential structure. Especially because its location off coast on a key, in the bay, with a view of the Skyline.

But being WSVN. Fingers-crossed they are designing something jaw-dropping. (for local tv news). I expects screens and lots of them. But think when they actually move. Especially how they promote it. They are going to do something stupid and over the top, and Im here for it. Mainly because local news is all Corporate mandate looks and samey-samey identical looks everywhere. Boring.
its the most ridiculous station. Everyone know that. But the best part is they dont care what people think. And its not like their ratings dip. They are number 1! They do what they do and they dont follow the crowd. Back in the day literrally everyone copied WSVN. Using the graphic style, Hiring their composers and Voice-over guy, even recreating their Newsplex. The station is nothing but consistent and that has to be recognized.

RE: American News Presentation - Medianext.MX - 18-08-2023

(15-08-2023, 02:42 AM)Medianext.MX Wrote:  WAVY has unveiled its new set and graphics. The graphics look cheap (unlike the other Rey Rodriguez designs for Nexstar), but the set looks very impressive and much more up-to-date compared to their previous set, even if the designs are clearly based in Nexstar design elements. Their well-known Newswire theme has survived the changes too (although we might not discard a future switch to a Stephen Arnold Music package, like they did recently with WOOD, which dropped Primetime News last year in favor of Stream, leaving the Spectrum Florida channels as sole holdovers):

The set was, indeed, done by Nexstar's in-house scenic shop (led by Arkansas contractor Lance Schroeder, working with a team based at WKRN in Nashville). A very long way for them indeed, the long-term design support by FX Design Group has really helped them to improve their designs from these infamous Dalek Desk looks (FX is reportedly supporting Nexstar's design teams in this, whilst designing sets for their larger stations in their portfolio).

And, surprisingly, the graphics were not done by Rey Rodriguez, but are the job of the station's in-house creative services department. Yes, they still look quite cheap and cheesy, but I am surprised the in-house CSD did this. It is nowadays rare to see an entire CSD working on its main graphics package, given the trend is to increasingly outsource production to third-parties and even the company-wide corporate graphics hubs.

That's pretty nice that WAVY got to do their own graphics, they don't look bad to me, a little weak, but not bad. I'm glad they got to keep their nice logo and music too.

Following up from another thread: More promos of the new newscast, Primetime Edition, are on air with small glimpses of what the set would look like. Looks like a virtual affair, with a heavy dose of VR graphics and a gigantic metal ring:
