RE: Challenge TV - Neil Jones - 10-07-2023

https://www.itvplc.com/contact-us  might be of interest, as might https://itv-vs-hub.kustomer.help/en_gb/contact/itv-programmes-form-5-S1VnW8WSI

Alternatively there are various episodes on YouTube, nowhere near complete of course and in varying types of quality - from potatovision to semi-decent.

Might be able to obtain what the BBC call a contributor copy (don't know what ITV call it), but may have to pay for it.
Should also be noted that if we're talking about Series1 of Blockbusters a few episodes are missing.

ITV Viewer Services will be no help, it'd be the ITV Archive (https://www.itvarchive.com/login/ ) who might be able to help but they state:

Quote:Registrations are limited to professional and commercial users only. We’re sorry but it is not possible to grant access to members of the public.
New clients, you will need to register first in order to licence content. Once registered you can search, view, request information and order content using the ‘Info Request’ screen.

No harm asking them ( clipsales@itv.com ) - give as much info as possible (bear in mind that it's unlikely they'll have a record of individual contestant names and be able to retrieve that) and be prepared for the inevitable response or no response at all.

At the risk of sidestepping the OP's question - is there a significant other of this retiree you could reach out to and see if they have a copy? Even if it's a video tape it'd be way more straightforward than trawling through the web to find this.

Good point there - but I don't think game show contestants are routinely given a copy of their episode?

RE: Challenge TV - J102B - 10-07-2023

Thank you all so much for your swift replies. We have reached out to their family, we have pictures of him on set. It seems they haven’t got a copy of him on the telly. We are seeking clarification of the date he went there which should I turn give us the series.

I’ll defo be giving the Clip sales a go… worst they can say is no

Newp. But they would be told when they'd be on and could set a video. 1983 it'd be more likely you'd be asking a wealthy friend to set theirs I suppose...

RE: Challenge TV - Steve in Pudsey - 10-07-2023

I'm quite surprised by them not providing a recording for contestants.

A former colleague was featured on BBC Inside Out and was sent a DVD copy, although thay may have been an exception as it was different region so he couldn't necessarily get it off air.

Maybe nowadays it is, but certainly wasn't back then.

RE: Challenge TV - Larry the Loafer - 10-07-2023

Burning a DVD for contestants nowadays is probably pennies compared to the cost of a tape in the early 80s, not to mention determining whether they had VHS or Beta (and then find out one contestant stuck loyally with V2000 so couldn't have either)

RE: Challenge TV - Neil Jones - 10-07-2023

When I last looked into copies of episodes of various things from the production company, it was something like £35 a tape. This was the early/mid 2000's though.

I notice looking at the BBC's Contributor Access they charge £60. And you don't even get a DVD option these says (they used to offer that or a tape) - it's just a "Digital file (radio programmes supplied as WAV, TV programmes as MP4)". It also has the caveat "If you were offered a free copy by the production team, please contact them directly as BBC Archives cannot provide a copy free of charge. "

Presumably it is (or was?) the same for the ITV companies, though of course good luck using that argument for an appearance or two on Blockbusters that was made by Central, which of course was eaten and folded into ITV plc and no longer exists on its own.

The argument that I think was made about lists of contestants not being available - well that didn't stop the police with the John Cooper case, and while we'll never know if they did or not, presumably somebody from the police went to ITV for a copy of the Bullseye episode he was on (for authenticity I presume) and I suspect they found the material relatively quickly.

Never been totally sure on how much paperwork TV companies keep, but if TVS is anything to go by, it seems pretty vital, otherwise nothing ever goes anywhere. Network did a lot of other clearances as well for their niche products, not that they'll be doing any more unfortunately, but presumably anything important/potentially lucrative the company will have full records for, and anything else (the likes that Network put out) needed rebuilding as it probably wasn't kept.

Don't know how true to real events the drama was but The Pembrokeshire Murders had the ITV Wales reporter locating the episode of Bullseye - or at least getting the ITV Archive to find it - rather than the police.
