RE: Challenge TV - BlueFrog - 29-11-2023

Samsung TV+ have recently launched Challenge and Sky Mix as FAST channels - they are both HD on there.

From what I've watched of it, in terms of ad breaks all of the promos/ECPs/idents are kept, but I think Samsung show their own adverts. And considering the FAST channels are based off of the telly channels, they use a loop like this for both to fill time, because they've not put up enough adverts to fill.

HD feed definitely exists for a proper feed but I'm not sure if it's been put up on any services.

Given Sky's apparent changing of satellite transponders to DVB-S2 next year and their closing of SD simulcasts in favour of having HD only channels, and that a HD stream of Challenge exists, is it likely we will see Challenge HD launching and the SD version closing, on satellite at least?

RE: Challenge TV - London Lite - 30-11-2023

I've had another look at Challenge on Sky Stream, looking closely at the logo as the show on-air is a 20 year old edition of The Weakest Link. It's a lot better compared to the compressed satellite and Freeview versions, but it's still SD.

So it's certainly HD only on Samsung TV Plus.

That programme isn't HD unless you got it's age wrong. There'd have been no reason for shows to be HD before the BBC HD channel launched in 2006, so if that Weakest Link episode is from 2003 it's definitely SD.

They'll have made programmes in HD even before they could show them that way, they did with colour and widescreen.

Not The Weakest Link though, nor anything else Challenge show, nor any gameshows I'm aware of? I know there was a PAL+ series of Fifteen to One but even that has only ever been repeated in 4:3.

They did repeat it in widescreen when they showed series 16 in 2015:

I always found ‘Introduced by William G Stewart’ an odd choice of words, as opposed to ‘Presented by…’ or ‘Hosted by…’

Surely if anyone’s introducing it, it’s the female voiceover at the beginning, or the continuity announcer.

Such a banger of a theme. Think his name will have come to many peoples minds with the news this week.

He probably would have had a field day

Wasn’t there a documentary about the Elgin Marbles that went out as a 15-to-1 Special? Think it went out in the Without Walls strand.

The widescreen repeats of series 16 looked pretty good and rather crisp (for SD, anyway) - sure they made mention of it in the first episode.

And am pretty sure the VO - which in the early years was usually Laura Calland - used ‘presented by’ during its first series at least.
