(what's the channel code for Challenge? Wink)

For anybody not in on the joke, have a look at this (but not if you're of a nervous disposition):

And in particular this, bearing in mind it dates from 2007.:

And if you haven't lost the will to live by then, this will probably finish you off:

(for our younger viewers, a classic example of why it wasn't necessarily better "back in the day".  It's also a good example of how to get 17 pages out of what was complete drivel in the first place)
Ahh, the good old days. Of course, Challenge has since changed from a V code to an S one Wink

Now let's watch some Boogie Beebies on B6

Good to hear from you Rob!

Was that one of the presenters cards?

Having a look at some old clips on Youtube it appears they gave away branded mugs, phones, the Tumble Game (rebadged Jenga), t-shirts and bottles of wine. I would assume you wouldn't actually receive a Challenge TV branded bottle of wine and the ones on screen were just for show?

RE: Challenge TV - JAS84 - 29-12-2022

I would imagine that the onscreen bottles were Challenge branded simply to avoid promoting brands for free? Like how The Price is Right blacks out the brand names on the products used in it's games?

Question, when whoever presented back then had a caller on and I think they used these for effect, my mind is misty about things like these. Did they ever hear the caller on through these or was it always through the earpiece and the telephone was just there for show?

Can't find any video of the actual phone-ins, but judging from this snippet in their CA (with the yellow handset), the former might be possible:

Supermarket Sweep also did that during the original series (despite on the end credits saying where they came from). The confusing bit was, was it product placement or not because of that?

RE: Challenge TV - JAS84 - 30-12-2022

Product placement was banned back then.

The original Dale Winton series of Supermarket Sweep had products supplied by Somerfield and Asda as the series went on. This wasn't the same as the more recent Rylan series where Tesco were the sponsor and associated company who provided the supermarket layout, signage and stock. Plus the Tesco logo was plastered all over the "store".

In the original series the products were purchased wholesale from Somerfield or Asda, or sometimes from the packaging manufacturer as a lot of the products were empty (lightweight frozen turkey anyone?!)

Central did put the supermarket name on the end credits but more like a thank you rather than a product placement deal (which wasn't allowed back then), yet the reboot was "brought to you by Tesco".

Product Placement wasn't a thing in this country TV wise until 2011. So that answers your question. No it wasn't.

Although it was deeply ironic that you could watch any major film you care to mention (or some high profile US import) on the telly and have the concept shoved down your throat. But the original film makers benefited, not the broadcaster so... but anyway I digress.

There was a difference between "thanks to Supermarket A" as opposed to "Bought to you by/courtesty of Supermarket A".
