Wow, I almost find it hard to believe that Sophie hadn't done a 1 or 6 during the ivory/cream era. Having started on Breakfast News in 1997 you'd automatically assume she had.

I don't think she had anyway. However, she had done weekend bulletins in the ivory/cream era

I know that set wasn’t particularly loved on TVF but I thought it really refreshed things.

Every bulletin in the previous set had virtually the same static shots, whereas in the 2003 set each bulletin was given a different style opening and closing.

Edit: come to think of it, the overall design of the BBC’s sets since really stem from this. E’s desk is very similar today.

Really interesting how things turn out. I know for sure that Sian Williams did the 6 from that same set, so if you're right, she naturally did it before Sophie and then became her deputy.

As chris says above, it was good that they introduced some camera movement and attempted to differentiate the different bulletins, but I just can't really say that I rate that particular set - it never sat well with either the cream and red look or the darker clamshell identity. While there are some good bits about the set, such as the very seamless use of mirrors to extend the backdrop, there are just too many clear flaws. The side screens have always been a particular issue for me - they somehow manage to be simultaneously too close and too far away from the desk - the standing explainer shots look cramped, while the over the shoulder and down the line shots look too spaced out.

It's also a shame that they decided to ditch the second version of the cream and red set after only 13 months - replacing one of my favourite national sets with one of my least favourite. More broadly, the whole 'light-up' era is also my least favourite generation of BBC News sets - not just was there no real consistency (other than white light-up desks), but no set really got it right anyway.

Also, looking back at the launch day clips there are two things that particularly stick out - the yellow tinge in the internal desk light just makes it look aged from day one. Plus they clearly altered the lightboxes fairly quickly after launch - I don't think I'd ever realised that they were a bit patchy to start with (though weirdly they ended up looking quite similar to that at the end of the set's life after they moved it into TC7).

It's amazing to think it's 20 years since that set launched. I remember setting a VHS to record the first 1 bulletin, and then watching it back once I got home from school. The set seemed so radically different to what had come before.

I don't think it's aged too well, whereas the cream and red set before it still looks pretty decent. The laptops on the desk always looked a mess as well.

Sian Williams was a special correspondent for the Six O’Clock News when it relaunched in 1999. She was also a deputy presenter, a role which she kept after becoming the weekend presenter on Breakfast in 2001. Essentially, she remained in the same place in the 2003 relaunch although she presented more editions as stand-in when Sophie was away.

The 2003 relaunch also brought Bill Turnbull to the Sux as George’s deputy. Both Bill and Sian would be replaced on Breakfast if they presented the Six during the week.

Forgot to mention that this morning was ten years since BBC World News finally left BBC Television Centre after 22 years. The 02:00-08:00 shifts had remained at TVC for two weeks longer than the rest of the channel. Not the end of N8, though, the BBC News channel continued to use the studio until 15th March for the 21:30-22:00 half-hour - a decision that has baffled me ever since.

My memory on this is a bit hazy now but wasn't N8 used between 21:30-22:00 to allow N6 to prep for the Ten? Of course they didn't have that problem at 17:30 as the Six came from TC7 which was free anyway.
