RE: BBC News Pres: Nostalgia - Steve in Pudsey - 22-09-2022

Why was Huw at Westminster on 7/7? Is it just down to where staff were able to get to due to the situation? Millbank would have been staffed for the Daily Politics 12-12.30 (if that went out) on BBC2

I am guessing the staff were unable to get into TV Centre, whereas people were probably in place at Westminster, hence I guess why Huw was there.

I am not sure if it happened in the end but the following Sunday BBC1 were due to show a remembrance programme about 60 years since the end of Second World War which included a church service. This was due to be presented by Huw and I believe he was rehearsing this in Westminster on the morning of 7/7. Apparently this rehearsal also confused sky news who reported that ‘troops were out on the streets of London’. They were but only heading home after the rehearsal was cancelled due to the events.

Some footage from the day the Queen Mother died with the Obit from Nick Witchell:

On this day in 2001, the War on Terror began and here is how BBC News 24 covered it with a rare appearance from George Alagiah in the News 24 studio.

Interesting to see George in that N8 set. There must be few BBC News sets over the past 30 years that he and Huw haven't presented from, though George surely has the advantage given his stints on World.

IIRC it was originally referred to as 'The War Against Terror', until someone noticed the unfortunate acronym it produced.  Blush

I suspect neither of them have presented from Studio D at NBH.  And probably 54D too?

Has George presented from the current Millbank set? (I daresay he's done DR rehearsals from there at some point but I'm not sure about on air).

There are actually a fair few when you think about it - just goes to show how many sets the BBC have. I doubt either have done anything from D or 54D. I'm also not sure George has done any actual programmes from C. I recall them pre-recording the 'coming up' summary for the Six in there, but I think he had left GMT before they started doing the pre-midday editions. I'm also not sure if he would ever have appeared on the 2003 N8 set.

Did George ever present from the blue 'virtual' set? I know that Huw occasionally did Breakfast and the Six in the mid-90s and was a semi-regular presenter on the One, but Alagiah isn't listed on Genome (though the One isn't listed during that period). I know that the two of them both presented News 24 during the flags era (I think covering Krishnan's slot after he left for C4), but he must surely have done some lower-ranking nationals stuff before they appointed him as a regular part of the nationals team?

Sort of related to this, here's Moira Stuart presenting a weekend bulletin from the Barco set in N6 (from 02:03).

Now it's probably a great time to look back at Beeb's newsroom in chaos, in 1989:
