I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea (for some reason) but I always found Nicholas Witchell to be a strong and stable and thoroughly good news presenter. Not sure why he gets so much ridicule from certain quarters.

And had completely forgotten about Tanya!

Agreed James. He was one of the best as a presenter. I loved his tenure at Breakfast News alongside Laurie Mayer and Jill Dando. Also thoroughly enjoyed him when he moved to the Six O Clock News. 

I think the vitriol aimed towards him is mostly from a generation that are unaware of his previous accomplishments in the field and in the studio. He’s one of the very few to have survived from the BBC News you and I grew up with in the 80’s and 90’s. His approach is still very much of that ‘old guard’ style and that itself puts people off I’m sure. 

Do you remember his holding down the fort after the Great Storm from the broom cupboard. Marvellous anchoring with very few tools to hand.

Before his days on the initial version of the Six, he held down postings in Northern Ireland and was also one of the BBC team in The Falklands.

Now in his 6th calendar decade of news reporting and presenting. 70’s. 80’s. 90’s. 00’s. 10’s. 20’s.

That’s quite a feat and probably not many around who can claim the same.

Was it mentioned on air this year? I know in 2017 they made quite a thing of it, by inviting back former presenters and playing old countdowns etc.

I doubt it. Its' funeral is rapidly approaching, hardly time to spend 30 mins celebrating it. I've not heard any presenters reference it either, not that I am paying attention 24/7.

I think most of the stick he gets is for a perceived sycophancy towards the royal family. Likely misplaced, it goes with the territory of the role really.
