RE: Top of the Pops - Gary Baldy - 10-02-2023

I doubt BBC4 is going anywhere any time soon- I think it’s just an idea being thrown around- closing it would be the same mistake closing BBC3 was. And BBC4 makes
more sense in the current climate to retain its linear spot- I’m glad for the 16-34s that they have something in linear schedules again with BBC3’s return, but in those years since it went online, a lot of its audience’s viewing habits went online too- and are unlikely to come back to linear. It never should have moved online in the first place, but the point I’m trying to make is that it makes far more sense to close the current linear feed of BBC3 (as most of their target audience are consuming their content online or streaming anyway) than it does BBC4, who target a much older audience- and it has a significant value as an archive channel- a lot of these shows you don’t see anywhere else- I doubt That’s TV would show archive Top of the Pops, and if they did, they’d put it on at 9 in the morning or something silly like that (they’re not very good at scheduling)- and personally I’ve really enjoyed seeing Early Doors repeated on BBC4 recently- I hadn’t seen it in its original broadcast- it completely passed me by- I’ve enjoyed seeing classic Come Dancing too, reliving the nostalgia.

If it does shut down, I wonder if the TOTP repeats will move to BBC2? They’ve definitely shown them there on occasion in the past- or will the Beeb just completely dispense with them?

Also, I never knew Colin Murray hosted Top of the Pops- I must have stopped watching by that point.

Would Blaxill have made the decision to axe Franklin and Dortie before he officially started as producer?

RE: Top of the Pops - Mr Birches - 15-02-2023

Colin Murray started hosting TOTP in 2003, at least in the first episode he talks about Jemini losing at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The BBC received one of those floppy disks with a custom font with the symbol on it then.

Here's a very weird thing. 28-6-96 has the credits run 20 minutes into the episode? (edited slightly for time)

Gosh that set looks so good- so many lights. Hasn’t really dated at all, despite being from 27 years ago
