I think that's the main reason, HBO is known for quality television and even discounting the Discovery shows, it was also a stickler for even kids show. Disney have the opposite issue that their brand is family entertainment and that can cause issues with more adult oriented content but having 20th Century as a sub brand does help in that regard.

HBO does have a family channel that predates HBO Max and I think HBO has done some original kids shows in the past.

I think generally it was an issue that a lot of original HBO Max programmes just weren't of HBO quality, especially when it came to dramas, and I can totally understand why people would come to an HBO Max original and expect it to be as good as an HBO original. Ultimately they changed the tag to "Max Original" to help get around the issue.

And now it is: Say hello to HBO Max, launching on May 23. Trading the purple for blue as well:

You learn something new every day, I always thought Sesame Street was a PBS show!

It is but I believe a few years ago, in order to secure extra funding, they signed a deal to premiere new episodes on HBO first.

The new episodes air nine months later on PBS after airing on HBO which is a good compromise as I imagine the target audience won't care.

In 2016, the show started on HBO , HBO Family, their family movie channel as part of a deal with Sesame Street Workshop. This was because donations and money from PBS stations was trending down and the way to keep the show running was to take the then Time Warner money. The show ran first on HBO Family , while PBS gets the show for free on a few months delay. The show was also cut from 1 hour to 30 minutes. Then the show moved to HBO Max when that was launched , whilst still airing on PBS.

Yes, and was reformatted into about 30 half hour episodes a year with the move to HBO when previously it was one hour and previously daily too.

I'm sure I saw that deal was coming to an end though, but it might have just been speculation with WBD pulling the plug on so much.

At least until 2025, according to this THR interview with Sesame Workshop:
Quote:It’s a strategy to could prove its value in 2025, when Sesame Workshop’s current deal with HBO Max to stream Sesame Street is set to end. HBO and HBO Max have been the home for new episodes of the program since 2016 (they air on PBS about a year later), but under new corporate owners Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO Max has been cutting back on its kids and family programming.

In addition to canceling some original programming, HBO Max also removed about 200 library episodes of Sesame Street, part of larger cost-saving measures at the company. With WBD rethinking its investment in kids and family fare, it begs the question whether the HBO Max deal will continue.

“We are constantly thinking of it,” [Steve] Youngwood says. “We have had a great history with HBO Max, and you know, it would be great if that continues in some forms. They have to figure out their strategy.”

“But you know, we were launch partners with Apple, we have stuff going on with Netflix, we have stuff going on with NBC, we have stuff going on with other people,” he adds.

RE: Warner Bros. Discovery - Company News and Discussion - Medianext.MX - 08-05-2023

Warner Bros. is starting to swap the 2019 Pentagram shield for the Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv WBD shield. The rationale for the unannounced change is the "nostalgia factor" of the 1948 and 1984 shields. The wordmark is a customized version of TT Norms, with shield-like Ps, Bs, and Rs.
