They'd struggle to have all those HD sources: HD video servers, graphics engines and cameras, without HD vision mixer and video router. The HD rollout does everything and replaces the gallery system with a more automated 'gallery in a box' solution

The regions vary quite a lot though , almost all got the same system back in the 2000s and some have replaced bits with their own solutions. There will be some bits in some regions that are HD compatible because they've needed replacing and there's no SD only ones available. But they'll be run in SD mode into the new production system because the router is SD. There have been some work around for that so that HD made content, like the old regional documentaries could be sent out in HD, normally my bypassing the router and plugging directly into the outgoing circuits, which have been HD for years
If theyre struggling with HD sources how are the monitor walls powered?

You mean the ones on sets? Good question, presumably they're seperate from the main video router and gallery systems.

As I say they've been handling HD in some situations for years, but on stand alone systems and clever ways of getting the video out of the building. Down the line cameras in some regions and the programme edit suites have been HD long before the news production part was. It could be done because they didn't rely on the main video router.

Though there was a system  called Dirac that allowed the BBC to pass HD video on an uncompressed SD video signal. This was used a lot to get HD from SD facilities over SD only circuits

The Red Slate bbc one feed still goes out on 27.5w but that’s more for dtt backup I guess so now never seen other then iplayer. Did notice bbc one on 13e as it was fta for a few days via Kabilio but that was showing London.

So has BBC1 NE&C now gone back to the generic Fred on 37 west? That had switched to NE&C but not sure if it changed back.

Btw I wonder if we will see a different red slate tomorrow? Last changed 16 October and usually changed every 6 weeks. We should therefore see different notice in 37 November? We will soon see

What's Kabilio and why was it carrying a BBC channel?

RE: BBC One Nightlight - i.h - 27-11-2023

it's a swiss satellite DTH service. They seem to specialise in carrying lots of foreign (to them) channels including most of the UK channels that matter. I asked this on here before and it was pointed out that Swiss copyright laws permit them to do this, if it can be received in Switzerland they can rebroadcast it.

RE: BBC One Nightlight - London Lite - 27-11-2023

All of the Swiss providers thanks to their copyright laws provide channels from neighbouring countries, although most if not all have distribution agreements with the German speaking channel groups as most German based channels have Swiss opts in the same way we do with Ireland, TF1 and M6 also have Swiss opts. But it's common to have channels from the UK, France, Germany, Austria and Italy on cable, IPTV and satellite systems.

I don't know if it's the case now, but Zattoo had an agreement with BBC Studios for distribution of the domestic channels although they didn't have to which included VOD content and it appears from their website that Kabilio has an agreement with France Télévisions.

Let's not forget some foreign stations are marked as 'must carry' by the local Swiss regulator for pay TV platforms. Those are:
-ARTE (Cultural channel, with French and German versions)
-3sat (Another cultural channel, for German speaking audience)
-Euronews (which has French, German and Italian feeds, 3 of the 4 official Swiss languages)
-TV5Monde (which has a feed just for France, Belgium, Switzerland and Monaco)
-Das Erste (ARD, Germany)
-ORF 1 (Austria)
-France 2 (France)
-Rai 1 (Italy)

Well SRG SSR is involved in both 3sat and TV5Monde. So them being 'must carry' at least makes sense.
