There isn't a market for straight daytime rolling news outside of Sky and BBC - GB News are just better off dropping any pretensions of being a 'news' channel outside of the moderately successful breakfast slot and go all in on their extreme right wing commentary - which they probably would do were it commercially viable and they could sneak it past Ofcom. Note they haven't been fined for any of their breaches so far.

I think fines come later for any breaches - if Ofcom concludes they are guilty of a breach, then there is a waiting time before we get the so called punishment from Ofcom (if any) as usually it will be a slap on the wrists and a teacher's style "must do better" comment from Ofcom

If they did ditch the news coverage, they would forfeit any EPG positions in the News category, and be lumped in with general entertainment. It's a perverse setup, in that they want to be seen as a news network for EPG and clout, but to do what they want to do, it needs to be classed as non-news content.

I believe GB News feel providing the hourly and sometimes half hourly straight forward news updates from the GB newsroom, then they can do what they want for the rest of the day - this means out of every one hour, around 5/6 minutes of straight news is all they want to offer, with the rest opinion led programming.

Now, does this satisfy Ofcom rules on being a "news" channel?

RE: GB News - agemame - 04-11-2023

I guess there must be some minimum content threshold, either in terms of clock hours or a percentage of the overall output. Otherwise those entertainment news interstitials on the likes of ITV2 could be used the same way.

It works for TalkTV, editorial most of the time, and news updates between 6am-6pm weekdays.

Michael Crick says he was thrown out of GB News tonight for this interview:

https://x.com/gbnewsspin/status/1720904159019594145?s=46&t=OuG-53CJRHzzDVEPmDXGSg

Neil Oliver apparently came off the break arguing the discussion should have continued and the gallery forced him to stop.

RE: GB News - Scrotnig - 05-11-2023

All of that was extremely unprofessional. Michael Crick did have a valid point, Neil Oliver clearly wanted to allow the point to be made but was stopped.

This type of thing does not help the channel at all. Why can’t they see that.

RE: GB News - DavidWhitfield - 05-11-2023

Crick was absolutely right; there's undeniably a massive right-wing bias where presenters are concerned and to pretend otherwise just makes them look ridiculous. The channel which claims to pride itself on allowing free speech in a way the 'mainstream media' fails to cutting someone off because he's delivering a viewpoint that they don't want on air is ironic in the most monumental of ways. What an utterly bewildering situation all round.

RE: GB News - radiorebel - 05-11-2023

Not a fan of Neil Oliver but I have to give him kudos on this occasion. GB News is supposedly the home of free speech, he was willing to honour that, the production team were not.

RE: GB News - JMT1985 - 05-11-2023

Once again, this has all the smell of Fox News about it - they have done the same thing in the US many many times

I remember watching The O'Reilly Factor in it's heyday and Bill O'Reilly (who thankfully is now relegated to the internet and obscure right wing channels) used to cut off people in the middle of a discussion when they didn't follow his narrative or he got bored with their left wing point of view

GB News from the start always said they weren't going to be a British Fox News - they are around 99% British Fox News now in their style and in their pretence of being fair and open to free speech.

They are also Fox News in style, with the self-aggrandizing "Britain's News Channel" - "The People's News Channel" - "Britain's Newsroom" - just look at Fox News calling themselves "America's News Headquarters".
