He also seems to not to understand that just because Channel 4 is government owned, doesn't mean it costs the government anything. Someone once said the current Channel 4 funding model is like you owning a house, but all the bills are paid by the person living there, you just own the property, all the upkeep is left with someone else. Surely that way of working would be attractive to the right wingers?

It doesn't matter how it is funded. It's just the case that government should not own anything. He isn't against how Channel 4 is funded. He's just against the actual ownership of it. Just because Mrs Thatcher brought it in doesn't mean that he agrees with it. Dan's political beliefs are that of a classical liberal. They do not believe that the state should own anything and that it should only have minimal intervention.

I don’t think he’s particularly ideological and is just trying to appeal to his audience.

Though this is hardly the forum for this kind of discussion, Dan Wootton has repeatedly said that he dislikes Channel 4 being owned by the government because he believes it's partisan and not impartial. It's nothing to do with some supposed classical liberalism, a phrase neither he nor anyone else would genuinely describe him as.

The worrying thing is the rate Tories get through Culture Secretaries he'll probably get a go nowadays though.

That is the general problem with GB News though - full of people with opinions rather than knowledge. Indeed that's a problem across the wider media too.

RE: GB News - KrazyKei - 26-05-2023

Well, whether you believe GB News is full of opinions, not a news channel, not centrist enough or not even pandering to the left, it is giving other providers a tough time.

RE: GB News - JMT1985 - 26-05-2023

Poor Talk TV - they shot themselves in the foot by being stingy. Murdoch has a lot of money, he could have made Talk TV into something which could compete with GB "News" but didn't.

He literally placed talkRADIO on television, and provided three hours per weeknight with a proper TV production.

No wonder viewers were not going to tune in - at least GB "News" had a dedicated 18 hours per day of live programming from their studios - TalkTV settled for radio on television from 5am to 7pm, followed by a few hours of a proper TV service, before back to radio on television again.

RE: GB News - London Lite - 26-05-2023

The problem with Talk TV is that it's more of the same. Both channels are going for the same audience who are into an already niche sub-section of society who get wound up about supposed culture wars.

I think where GB News wins is that the target audience see it as a renegade channel where as Talk TV is owned by a "MSM" newspaper publisher which is part of the establishment.

What I believe Murdoch has tried to do with Talk TV is the old fashioned spoiler technique used by newspapers when a competitor comes into the market by providing an almost identical product to GB News to ensure News UK continues to have the larger share of the right-wing media market. But it hasn't worked on television at least. They might as well invested in beefing up Talk Radio without the need for a linear tv channel.

I’m not entirely sure we needed an analysis of Channel 4’s funding here going over all that old ground just because the channel was mentioned.

RE: GB News - TMD_24 - 28-05-2023

John Cleese was on GB News this morning, his new show is supposed to start in September based on what Camila Tomiley mentioned.
