RE: BBC/ITV Wales/S4C News - what - 04-01-2024

Transport companies do seem to be a recurring theme when it comes to regional weather sponsorship. BMIbaby were the sponsor in Wales and a few other regions (Central was one, IIRC) in the mid-late 00s, and Meridian have/had EuroTunnel and SeaFrance.

Although TUI is technically a package holiday company rather than purely an airline especially when they use the ‘TUI Blu Hotels’ sponsorship variant

Greater Anglia is the current weather sponsor on ITV Anglia

Utility companies is another popular one. Granada has had United Utilities (wet wipes? Toilet or bin?) for years

Granada, Border, Tyne Tees, Wales, Central & Thames Valley all had BMIBaby as their weather sponsorships

Staybrite Windows were the mainstay sponsors for HTV and Central around the turn of the 00s - pretty sure Steve Ryde voiced the bumpers.

Granada went through quite a lot of sponsorless periods - but they did attract the likes of First Choice Holidays in the late 90s.

Vaughan Hughes, probably best known as one of the anchors of HTV’s Welsh language news programme Y Dydd, has died suddenly at the age of 76.

He went onto found an indie company, Ffilmiau Bont, upon the creation of S4C before moving into local politics on his native Anglesey.

Back to the S4C management story, and current chair Rhodri Williams was in front of Westminster's Welsh Affairs Select Committee today. The committee has recommended that the government shoold appoint a new chair.

Been reading up a rather excellent book by Elain Price on the early years of S4C, which I thoroughly recommend (it's called 'Broadcasting for Wales')

One bit of interest goes into detail about how HTV - which had already run into some trouble regarding programme supply - tried to secure the news contract (not wanting to give up their Welsh language news requirements)

The NUJ suggested setting up an independent unit, but that was quickly ruled out - while HTV even favoured a Thames-LWT style split between them and the BBC (HTV until 7pm on Friday and BBC throughout the weekend), which the Beeb steadfastly rejected.

It took the two heads of programming to come up with a provisional (but not ideal) agreement to take news from one provider and current affairs from the other.

Which is pretty much what happened in the end, because soon after, doubts emerged about the high costs of HTV's proposed service - £9 million for weekdays alone (the BBC were offering theirs for free), before finally, ITN put their foot down on any separate editorial control of their material, which cleared the way for the Beeb.

Interesting, though makes sense given the need of S4C to cover UK and International news too. Indeed prior to 1982 did the Welsh news programmes cover much in that regard or were they basically a translation of the Enhglish language Wales bulletins?

AFAIK, both 'Heddiw' and 'Y Dydd' tended more to cover Welsh national news rather than UK and world news.

And they certainly wouldn't have been just mere translations of 'Wales Today' and / or 'Report Wales' - they did have their own reporting and production teams and both programmes wouldn't have necessarily followed the same running orders every night.

The Senedd Culture Committee has also voted that the S4C chair should be replaced.

Rhodri Williams himself has rejected and criticised calls for his resignation / replacement.
