Not really, in so much as they've previously had a few of these channels on the iPlayer.  Scott has presumably noticed that the iPlayer home page now has a section entitled 'iPlayer Channels' to highlight these channels.

Figured I'd bring it up, but every Doctor Who episode is going on the iPlayer from the 1st November. One might imagine that to eventually become a FAST Channel

RE: BBC iPlayer - AndrewP - 11-10-2023

I did notice a few people on-line wondering how many subscribers ITVX will lose when Classic Who moves over

App has also been updated with a new UI, more in line with BBC Sounds.

Hmm, just had a play with it and while it's better than the strange top pull down UI they had before it doesn't feel particularly fully baked.

The dial is fun to scroll, and there are some nice haptics to accompany it, but unlike Sounds you have no idea what's on any of the channels as this is not displayed. It also gives S4C a strange prominence on the app and the new FAST channels are nowhere to be seen. I feel that a Channels tab on the bottom bar which then showed a vertical list with each channel listed along with what is currently showing and an image of the programme would have been a better implementation. This would show you everything you can watch live in one simple view.

The categories also look rather bleak just being empty boxes, I presume the idea was for graphics in each box but they haven't got these ready yet.

I agree.

My impression of this UI and the BBC Sounds equivalent is that somebody at the BBC really misses their old iPod with clickwheel!

It doesn’t scale very well, as the more channels/stations you have, the more awkward it is to scroll through them all - and I’d argue that the BBC already have enough channels of Radio and TV to make this a bit of a problem (something that will only get worse as they launch further FAST-style channels).

There’s a reason, to my mind, that a classic “TV Guide” grid is how almost every TV works - it’s the easiest way to view multiple channels at once and quickly see at a glance what is on each one. It scales well because it’s easy to scroll.

This interface is a bit like how taste tests of food and drink are misleading compared to asking people to eat/drink a whole portion as they would normally. When shown to a focus group, the animations appear fun and modern (so they judge it to be an improvement) but when you scroll through it in real life, looking for something specific, it makes this more difficult and creates a step back in usability.

RE: BBC iPlayer - Stooky Bill - 14-10-2023

Talking of BBC Sounds (it doesn't seem to have it's own thread), there was an interesting promo for Sounds at the end of Would I Lie To You last night - for a podcast called The Allusionist. It's a podcast that's been around for years, produced by Helen Zaltzman and originally linked to an American public radio group and more recently independent and ad funded.

So it was a bit surprising to see it pop up on Sounds and promoted on BBC1. I can't find anything about what the deal is with it, Sounds isn't like Spotify or Global Player which carry third-party podcasts, and it seems like a special edit without adverts (which are always self read rather than inserted)

Is this update on Apple only or is it on both Apple and Andriod?

RE: BBC iPlayer - harshy - 14-10-2023

My phone never seems to want to update bbc apps I have to always uninstall it first, I won’t bother this time though.

It’s available on both platforms.
