I'd been using the beta version on Android, but it's now gone back to something much closer to the original layout:

Not surprising given how long it's been in Beta - possibly even before the Chameleon look was rolled out on screen.   I rolled back very quickly after testing it

There is an interesting thing mentioned on the Google Play store with regard to the latest BBC News app update:

Quote:This release keeps the app up to date with bug fixes and addresses some crash reports. We have also been working on support for an upcoming update to significantly improve the experience and help enable exciting new changes in the future.

So why does one get the feeling the thing we've been experiencing is due to be rolled out in one of the updates coming up. Either the next one or one after that.

The News app has already changed for me. It's now fully Reithed with a new template using Android 13.

It is very bizarre for the BBC to be seen to prioritize spending money to update the UK version of the BBC News app while the app for international audiences still has it's old version available to people who live outside of the UK. However the reverse is applied to it's TV news bulletins in allowing the World feed of the news channel to get priority for the UK licence fee payers while the UK feed of the channel is now part time news service being provided for same. What is the main reason for these developments to take place at the moment? Is it different budgets to prioritize different remits within the BBC.

Even more bizarre is that one of the top five stories on the new BBC News app is about the return of a stolen dog in Essex. Another top five story is London Ulez. The main story is a magazine style human interest piece. Only two of the top five feature stories are National/International news.

Have I got this app set up incorrectly? Surely this can’t be the news agenda of one of the worlds pre-eminent news organisations.

Not suprised about ULEZ story dominating, the media far too often forgets there's a world outside the M25. Doesn't matter that the expansion only affects around 5% of the population and is pretty much irrelevent to anyone not in or around outer London, it dominates the agenda.

Why does the icon not animate at the start? Only the i-player icon animates but on the promo video for the BBC rebrand, it shows all the icons animating on phones. Another irritating inconsistency is the way the blocks squash at the top on the News app but not on any of the other apps.

This one is a London based story, but plenty of other cities have ULEZ/clean air zones and that number is only going to get more and/or the areas they cover get bigger - so it's going to affect us all one way or another sooner rather than later.
