The text looks like it’s set in Frutiger or something very similar.

Photos from the time suggest it's the same as it always was

I am sure Martin Lambie-Nairn stated that the balloon never went where intended when filming the idents, so was generally replaced by GCI or composite shots.

I think the actual balloon was normally used for live public events, which of course doesn't detract from its iconic status.

If Points West doesn't start with a recreated ident (using footage from the fiesta) tomorrow I'll be disappointed.

I was under the impression that most of the original batch were real, but most of the subsequent additions had the balloon digitally edited into scenes.

When you think about it, quite a few of them would actually have been impossible to create for real. If the wind carries the balloon out over St Michael’s Mount or the Needles, you’re in for a very wet landing.

Furthermore, I have just done a search on the BBC Motion Graphics Archive. Here is a selection of the information I gleamed from it.

Real Balloon
Canary Wharf
Eilean Donan Castle

CGI Balloon
Angel Of The North / Footballers
The Needles, Isle Of Wight
St. Michael's Mount
Sydney Olympic Games

That's right. It was a nightmare trying to align the balloon with the location and various weather conditions. One of the original ideas was that the physical balloon *could* also be rolled out for set-piece events, such as the FA Cup Final. The idea being: it'd fly over the venue giving a sense that the fourth wall had been broken. The reality: much the same as filming the actual thing, trying to plot a predetermined course for a balloon proved fraught with challenges. It also became quite quickly apparent that the actual aerospace the balloon would be allowed in wasn't, shall we say, favourable to set-piece events.

The Forth Bridges was real. I’ll get my grandad to dig out the photographs of it flying over the forth bridge he took.
