I really had hoped that the days of self inflicted internal BBC crises like this were over.  History will not be kind to Tim Davie if he caves in to political pressure.

Davie caving to political pressure would be in allowing Lineker to return without agreement over future social media use for those unsure.

The BBC explicitly stated this evening what its issue was with Lineker's actions: "We have said that he should keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies." This situation, in the BBC's own words, has nothing whatsoever to do with the specifics of his comments - the BBC has made it plain that it's simply not happy with Lineker expressing opinions with political implications. That is the issue here, and the BBC couldn't have been clearer in explaining that.

And the guidelines for all who “work” for it is very clear …
Particularly for what OFCOM deems controversial
https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidance/individual-use-of-social-media/
Section 2 in particular …..

And it’s general applicability
“ Everyone who works for the BBC should ensure their activity on social media platforms does not compromise the perception of or undermine the impartiality and reputation of the BBC, nor their own professional impartiality or reputation and/or otherwise undermine trust in the BBC.”
And
“ The extent to which a non-staff member, contributor or presenter is required to comply with the Editorial Guidelines will be set out in the BBC’s contractual relationship with them.”

Kaveh Solhekol from Sky Sports News has nailed it here:

That's the biggest problem that the BBC have right now, they don't have the moral high ground to stand on. If they had dealt with all of the other people who had expressed strong political views in the past the same way as they were treating Lineker now then I'd not have a problem with it, but the issue here is that seemingly they are allowing political commentary in one direction but clamping down on it in another direction.

It's hard to see how the BBC can come out of this well, bearing in mind some of their management's links to the Government and the fact that they appear to be using a different rulebook for different people.

Just an idle thought - Lineker's views have attracted a certain amount of support. Shouldn't an impartial news broadcaster have been reflecting that opinion as a matter of balance?

I’m not sure I remember a day when - even if you put the Lineker row to one side - the BBC was having to defend itself on **three** other fronts. The Attenborough stuff looks to be a wilful misinterpretation by the Guardian of a commissioning decision but there’s been a lot of criticism of the statement put out by the press team of Fiona Bruce’s attempts to “clarify” Stanley Johnson’s historic domestic abuse on Question Time last night:

Then there’s this:

I don’t buy that there’s some inherent internal pro-government bias going on but for all four of these things to come out with a few hours of each other is deeply, deeply unfortunate for the corporation’s image.

No, it wouldn't be political pressure. Public pressure, maybe, but that is not the same as political pressure.

How much are tickets to whatever planet you're on? I could use a break.

Can they get someone to agree to do the voiceover in between all the matches?
